A system and method for determining the orientation of fibers in a fibrous material web. The system includes at least one source of electromagnetic radiation disposed on one side of the fibrous material web, at least one sensor for sensing the electromagnetic radiation emitted by the at least one source disposed on another side of the fibrous material web, and at least one optical device disposed between the at least one source and the at least one sensor, wherein the electromagnetic radiation travels through the at least one optical device and the fibrous material web such that the at least one optical device influences a propagation of the electromagnetic radiation as a function of its polarization properties. The method includes exposing a first side of the fibrous material web to electromagnetic radiation from at least one source, allowing the electromagnetic radiation to penetrate to a second side of the fibrous material web, influencing a propagation of the electromagnetic radiation as a function of its polarization properties with at least one optical device disposed between the at least one source and at least one sensor, and sensing the electromagnetic radiation on the second side with the at least one sensor.

System and method for determining fiber orientation in fibrous material webs

In a coating method for direct or indirect application of a coating medium onto a moving surface, the amount of coating medium dispensed by an applicator device within a given time period and the actuating force that is exerted on the metering element, in order to achieve a coating layer of a desired coating weight, are altered independently of each other. In a relaxation operation mode, the amount of coating medium applied within a given time period is reduced when the coating weight exceeds a desired value; when the coating weight falls below the desired value, the actuating force exerted on the metering element is reduced. In a contact pressure based operating mode, the amount of coating medium applied within a given time period is reduced when the coating weight exceeds a desired value; when the coating weight falls below the desired value the actuating force exerted on the metering element is increased. When the coating weight falls below the desired value, the amount of coating medium applied within a given time period is increased and the actuating force exerted on the metering element is reduced, while keeping constant the contact pressure of the metering element against the moving surface.

Method of controlling the amount of coating applied on a moving material web

Measurement system and process for measuring a cross-direction profile of specific properties of at least one of a material web and a coating on the material web. The system includes at least one stationary cross-direction profile measurement device having at least one radiation source adapted to irradiate the at least one of the material web and the coating on the material web in a plurality of defined and different wavelength ranges, and at least one sensor adapted to measure the intensity of radiation affected by the at least one of the material web and the coating on the material web. The system also includes at least one measurement and/or evaluation electronics system. Each sensor detects only one of the defined different wavelength ranges of the radiation at a specific point in time. The process includes irradiating the at least one of the material web and the coating on the material web with a plurality of defined and different wavelength ranges via at least one radiation source, and measuring an intensity of radiation affected by the at least one of the material web and the coating on the material web with at least one sensor. Only one of the defined different wavelength ranges of the radiation is measured by each sensor at a specific point in time.

A method for determining the effect of an adjustment of actuators used in the manufacture of web of material which are arranged spatially over the width of the web and influence the properties of the web of material, the method being characterized by the fact that, upon the adjustment of one actuator, a prediction as to the effect of the adjustment of the actuator which is derived from detection values on the behavior of the cross section of the property of the web upon the change of actuators is made; that at least one cross section of a property of the web is measured before and after the adjustment of the actuators; that the prediction as to the effect of the actuator adjustments is compared with the measured effect; and that the existing detection values are modified until better agreement is obtained between predicted effect and measured effect.
