The invention relates to a tubular rivet connection between at least one first () and one second metal sheet (). According to the invention, the tubular rivet () is made from the metal of the first metal sheet () by deforming, in a drawing direction (Z), the edge area of a first hole () located in the first metal sheet () into a second, larger hole () located in the second metal sheet (), whereby the second hole () located in the second metal sheet () is, in particular, gradually enlarged with regard to its diameter in the drawing direction (Z). The invention provides that the tubular rivet () is shorter in length in the drawing direction (Z) than the thickness of the second metal sheet (). To this end, the thickness tolerance of commercially available metal sheets is taken into account and damages to the tools and/or the formation of chips is/are prevented. With regard to the method for producing such a tubular rivet connection, the invention provides that the second metal sheet () is supported by a matrix, which has a diameter approximately corresponding to the diameter of the hole () in the second metal sheet ().

The invention relates to a method for producing lamella packets ( ) of the type normally used in adjustable steering columns in automobiles and which comprise a soft lamella ( ) made of soft sheet metal material and at least one layered hard lamella ( ) placed on top of said material. Punched and bent parts (1, 2, 3), manufactured by non-cutting shaping, are assembled to a rigid box by using exclusively mutual riveting, optionally in part also spot welding, of the material of the punched and bent parts, thus without any additional material requirements. The parts (13) serving for bearing the steering shaft (15) are high precision pieces also obtained by non-cutting shaping. A very efficient, high precision manufacturing is thus achieved free from any finishing treatment and without auxiliary means for the connection of the punched and bent parts.

Strips which are to be worked in a forming tool are taken out of a magazine and deposited on a guide at which by means of a finger rod with elastic catchs they are guided to the tool and stepwise advanced through said tool. Workpieces are transported step-by-step by means of transport bars which are provided with grippers and which are longitudinally and transversally displaceable only in cyclic relation to the reciprocating movement of a press. The transport bars have the configuration of hollow profiles which are rigid with respect to bending and torsional stresses, and their ends are rigidly constrained and guided by means of angle brackets and by means of longitudinal guidings and transversal guidings both of which are free of play. Thus, a particularly rigid and a relatively lightweight construction results which allows high working cadences.

The process of the present invention allows for the manufacture of lacquered aluminum or tin-plate rings which have the inner edge thereof bent over outwards so that they are suitable for the closures on cans for foodstuffs. A ring blank made of lacquered sheet is pre-shaped by deep drawing to form the curvature needed for bending over the inner cut edge. The final shaping of the pre-shaped blank into a ring for a can lid takes place, after stamping out the opening, by stretching and bending over the cut edge. When a tear-back membrane is sealed on to the bent-over edge, the ring is suitable as an easily opened closure for cans for foodstuffs.

The pre-fabricated pouring outlet in a lid for cans containing carbonated drinks lies basically at an angle of 0.degree. or 90.degree. to the rolling direction of the sheet from which the lid is made. The surface of the lid features at least one ring-shaped stiffening groove which points towards the can interior, is concentric with the periphery of the lid and is interrupted in the region of the pouring outlet. The diameter of the groove is 65-80% of that of the nominal diameter of the can. The stiffening groove raises the resistance of the lid towards pressure from inside the can by about 10%. This means that, when manufacturing a lid which has to withstand a specific pressure from inside the can, and using the same material, the thickness of the lid can be reduced to save material.

A method for producing a cover for a tin or can is disclosed wherein the cover just prior to forming a weakening scoring thereon is orientated in a definite direction. Apparatus for carrying out such method is also disclosed comprising an alignment station provided at the entry to at least one processing device, said alignment station having means for rotating each cover and means for stopping said cover in a definite rotary position. A cover produced by such method is disclosed, said weakening scoring in said region transverse to the grain direction of said cover being made deeper than said weakening scoring parallel to the direction of rolling.
