In a method of drying inks which are printed on to a paper web in the printing mechanisms of a rotary intaglio printing machine and which are diluted by means of a solvent. the paper web, downstream of each printing mechanism, passes through a drier having a substantially closed housing through which flows a gas which serves to pick up and carry away the solvent. To achieve a reduction in the residual solvent concentration in the finished printed product in spite of an increased speed of the paper web, the drying gas used in at least one of the driers is an inert gas, the through-put thereof through the drier being so selected that a solvent concentration which is very high in comparison with drying with air occurs in the drier.

Drying method

In an inking system of a rotogravure printing press there are included an ink reservoir, an ink doctor blade device and an ink catch reservoir. All of these components of the inking system are height-adjustable with respect to the formed cylinder of the printing machine.

A bearing assembly for a rotary printing press cylinder supports a journal of the cylinder using a plurality of support rollers. At least one of the cylinder journal support rollers is moveable so that the cylinder will either be supported or can be removed from the printing press.

In a rotary rotogravure printing press for accomplishing the multicolor printing of first and second sides of a material to be printed, first side printing units and second side printing units are arranged in an alternating form. Dryers are located between the alternating first and second material side printing units, which may be configured as tower printing units.

An inking system for a rotary printing press utilizes a chain seal to prevent ink from passing from the ink receiving chamber of an ink reservoir beyond the length of the portion of a cylinder to be inked. A chain seal, that is comprised of a plurality of individual plates and pins, intimately engages the surface of the cylinder and keeps the ink in the ink receiving chamber.

A rotogravure inking system uses an ink trough to apply ink to a printing cylinder that dips into ink in the ink trough. The ink trough has a length less than the length of the printing cylinder. Projecting end portions of the printing cylinder are not supplied with ink from the ink trough. Thus end faces of the printing cylinder will not receive any ink and will not throw off the ink thereby eliminating ink spattering and the associated spatter protection shields.

Rotogravure inking system

In the case of a short inking unit with at least one transfer roll in the form of a pitted roll a compact design is made possible together with a reliable and accurate inking effect by the feature that there are at least two doctor blades mutually offset from each other in the peripheral direction of the pitted roll. Both the doctor blades have a negative angle of engagement with the periphery of the roll and delimit an ink chamber in the circumferential direction while the ends of this chamber are shut off by cheekpieces. At the walls of the ink chamber there is at least one supply port to be connected in a pressure-tight manner with an ink supply and at least one overflow port.

In a folder with at least one folding blade cylinder cooperating with a folding jaw cylinder, and with a guide mechanism which is located at each outlet wedge situated after the folding place in the direction of rotation of the respective cylinders cooperating in the folding process, extends over the entire length of the cylinder, and guides the parts of the sheets lying, after the folding place, on the circumferential section of the folding blade cylinder and being taken therefrom in the folding process, a long life of the guide mechanism as well as careful handling of the signatures to receive a cross fold can be guaranteed by the guide mechanism being equipped with a middle part which is so supported that it can turn freely around an axis parallel to the cylinder and has an approximately cylindrical surface, and with stationary connecting parts which join the said middle part laterally and have a surface contour cutting about tangentially into the surface of the middle part.

A delivery device comprising at least one conveyor belt defining a conveying plane arranged under a fan wheel to receive products from the fan wheel more especially in the form of an overlapping stream. The device has at least one elongated and raised member that is aligned with the direction of delivery and which slopes downwards from a higher level than the conveying plane on the conveying belt in the direction of delivery and at its front end has an edge that adjoins the conveying plane on the conveying belt side.

In a strand length for conveying and slowing down folded products beteen two consecutive stations of a folding apparatus, particularly between a folding cylinder and a folding sword or delivery station, with a minimum of two consecutive stand sections driven at opposingly stepped speeds, each strand section including an upper and lower belt set having a plurality of parallel belts in each set and a minimum of one forward belt roller in the conveying direction and one rear belt roller in the conveying direction, of which at least one of the front belt rollers of the faster moving rear strand section in the conveying direction and at least one of the rear belt rollers of the slower moving front strand section in the conveying direction are adjustable for height, and the belts of each of said belt sets are spaced apart and staggered by at least a belt width so that said rear and front strand sections may be dovetailed into each other.
