In a word processing machine which operates to provide text in the form of successive lines of characters, and includes an input keyboard for the input of character representations, a data memory connected for storing such representations, a display device connected to receive such representations from the memory and presenting a horizontally-extending plurality of character display locations the right-hand one of which is an entry location, and a control unit connected for controlling the display provided by the display device in a manner to cause the display device to display at least a portion of a line of characters, with each character appearing, in the order of its input to the keyboard, at an entry location of the display and then shifting to the left in the display upon delivery of each subsequent character to the display, the display device is arranged to present at least one further character display location to the right of the entry location, and the control unit is made operable for causing at least a portion of a line of previously inputted characters to be displayed at adjacent ones of the character display locations, including the further location.

Word processor with display device

A microprogrammed word processor, e.g., a typewriter or accounting machine or billing machine, has both normal and special modes of operation. During the normal mode, as alphanumerics and control characters (e.g., space, tab, line feed) are keyed in, the printing carriage is stationary at a margin. While fed-in characters are being memorized in the normal mode, the alphanumerics are viewable on a display. However, neither printing nor carriage movement takes place until later, when one of several separate print instruction signals are recognized by the computer program. During a special mode, as characters are keyed in, there is still no printing of alphanumerics; but, there is non-printing carriage movement along the line of print, to the particular printpoint associated with each keyboard actuation. Accordingly, as the fed-in characters and associated printpoints are being memorized, their actual physical positions, relative to a record carrier such as a preprinted bill or form, are viewable by the machine operator. During the feed-in step, operators can thus make carriage adjustments so as to effectuate proper alignment, of the later to be printed alphanumerics, on different types of forms. Thereafter, the actual printing of the forms can take place from memory into the proper positions on the forms, with the carriage moving either right-to-left or left-to-right.

Word processor adapted for filling in blanks on preprinted forms

A word processing machine for printing text in the form of successive lines of characters on a record carrier and including a printing mechanism constructed to operate with interchangeable typing elements, each typing element carrying a selected set of type characters each corresponding to a respective character representation, a function keyboard for effecting input of first and second function instructions, input of the first instruction being effected when character representations are to be inputted which correspond to type characters carried by another typing element; and a control unit responsive to the first function instruction for temporarily preventing printing of characters corresponding to character representations subsequently inputted via a character input keyboard and for storing each character representation together with the first function instruction in the memory in a manner to indicate the intended location of the associated character on the record carrier, while causing the printing mechanism to leave a blank space at that intended location, and responsive to the second function instruction, after the other typing element is introduced into the printing mechanism, for causing readout from the memory of the character representations stored together with the first function instruction and printing of the associated characters at the respective intended locations on the record carrier.
