A device and method are for separating at least one optical fiber. A swivelled element and an asymmetric anvil are used so that a section of the fiber is contacted only in two positions that are substantially insignificant for the tensile strength of a spliced fiber. In one position, the glass fiber core of the section of the fiber is protected from damages by a fiber sheathing. In the other position that is contiguous to the position of separation, mechanical damages are of minor importance since they are at least partially repaired by the heat produced during splicing.

A device is for actuating the flaps of an optical waveguide splicer. The device includes a wind protection flap that can be rotated around a first rotational axis between a closed state and an open state, a first holding flap that's is arranged underneath the wind protection flap on a side of a splicing location and can be swiveled around a second rotational axis between a closed state and an open state and a second holding flap that is arranged underneath the wind protection flap on the remaining side of the splicing location and can be swiveled around the second rotational axis. The wind protection flap is provided with a first coupling device via which the first holding flap and/or the second holding flap can be coupled to the movement of the wind protection flap from the closed state into the open state.

In order to fix mutually parallel light-guide ends in a clamping device, it has to be ensured, when using a standard clamping device for different numbers of light-guide ends, that the clamping device is positioned differently depending on the number of light-guide ends. Prior-art apparatuses are of very complex design and are difficult to use. The invention specifies an apparatus which is of straightforward design and in which, depending on the number of light-guide ends which are to be clamped, the clamping devices is fitted in each case in mounts assigned to the number of light-guide ends. The mounts are advantageously arranged here in the form of a centering body which, by rotation through 90&deg; in each case about its longitudinal axis and/or through 180&deg; about a transverse axis perpendicular to said longitudinal axis, is brought into a total of eight different positions. This provides fixedly predetermined mounts for a total of eight different numbers of light-guide ends.

In an installation for alignment of an optical waveguide, particularly a monomode optical waveguide, for splicing purposes a rotary device grasping the optical waveguide is provided. This rotary device has at least one support plate resting against the optical waveguide which, in relation to the optical waveguide, is displaceably mounted in a tangential direction.

A device for observing the ends of optical waveguides, which ends are being adjusted relative to each other for splicing purposes, characterized by two separate microscopes arranged to view adjustments along two perpendicularly extending directions. Each of the microscopes has a mirror arrangement for bending the optical paths onto a common intermediate image plane and the microscopes have a common eyepiece for observing the common intermediate image plane so that adjustments along both directions can be observed without changing eyepieces. Preferably, a diaphragm is provided to be alternately moved into the path of one microscope to block the vision while observing the view of the other microscope.

A device for splicing light waveguides, such as optical fibers, having an internal sheath and an outer sheath, characterized by an arrangement for clamping each of the waveguides by engaging their sheaths and lowering the unsheathed end portion into a centering groove where the ends are heated and fused together by an alternating current discharge path. The required convergence and alignment of the light waveguide ends during the welding step are automatically controlled by an advanced arrangement which is sequentially controlled with the welding step. Subsequent to the gearing of the ends, the clamping element releases the waveguides adjacent to the fused joint and are moved by a restoring arrangement to stretch the joint into a straight line position.
