A progressive ophthalmic lens including at least one distant vision zone in which the power is suitable for distant viewing, at least one near vision zone in which the power is suitable for near viewing, and at least one progression zone in which the power varies continuously from the power of the distant vision zone to the power of the near vision zone along a principal line, at least one surface of the ophthalmic lens contributing to the power variation. A surface astigmatism of the at least one of surface of the ophthalmic lens contributing to the power variation along at least one horizontal intersection, represented by an intersection of the ophthalmic lens and a horizontal plane where y&equals;const, has a local maximum value located at a distance of not more than 4 mm from the principal line, and at least one local minimum value which does not lie on the principal line and is located at a greater distance from the principal line than the local maximum value.

Progressive ophthalmic lens

An ophthalmic lens in which one surface is provided with at least one region, in which the refracting power is practically constant except for aspherical corrections, and at least one transition region which is adjacent to the region having practically constant surface refracting power, and in which the surface refracting power increases or decreases continuously, and the other surface is provided with an astigmatic effect. The orientation of the surface having an astigmatic effect relative to the surface having continuous refracting power change is dependent on the position of the axis of the astigmatism of the eye. The surface having an astigmatic effect deviates from the toric shape and is independent of the orientation of the surface relative to the surface having continuous refracting power change which is a surface optimized for the axial position of 0.degree..

A progressive spectacle lens is described which has a convex aspherical front surface 1 and a concave aspherical back surface 2, of which at least one surface contributes to the power increase from the distance portion 3 over the progression corridor 4 to the reading portion 5. The progressive spectacle lens in accordance with the present invention is characterized by the fact that the surface 1 or the surfaces contributing to the power increase are designed in such a way that the main portion of astigmatism is transposed into an area 3 in which the power practically does not increase and by the fact that the surface astigmatism of the two surfaces 1 and 2 substantially cancel each other out in these areas 3 or 6. (See FIG. 1).

A multifocal lens is described with a main lens designed for distance vision and a segment designed for near vision. The lens in accordance with the present invention is characterized by the fact that one surface of the segment consists of the progression area and the reading portion of a progressive surface. In an advantageous further development the progressive surface whose progression area and reading portion form one surface of the segment is designed in such a way that its surface astigmatism is concentrated essentially in the distance portion.

A spectacle lens with a high positive refracting power, whose front surface has an aspheric, rotationally symmetric effective part. The effective part is configured in accordance with the following equation: ##EQU1## where z is the sagitta, h is the distance from the optical axis, C is determined by the desired refracting power of the front surface at the vertex, and K and I.sub.i are aspheric coefficients. The aspheric coefficients K and I.sub.i are determined so that either the visual acuity V is a maximum or .vertline..DELTA.R.vertline.+.vertline..DELTA.S.vertline. is a minimum. The lens produces a pattern of aberration which allows complete utilization of the visual field for dynamic vision.

In the disclosed lens, one lens surface is divided into an upper distance-vision portion FT, a lower near-vision portion NT, and a varying or transitional region PB between the two other portions. In the upper distance-vision portion, the surface contains a far reference point B.sub.F and exhibits predetermined average distance-vision surface refractive powers D.sub.F. The lower near-vision portion contains a near-vision reference point B.sub.N and has predetermined average near-vision surface refractive powers D.sub.N. The transitional region exhibits average surface refractive powers D.sub.P which effect a smooth transition from the distance-vision portion to the near-vision portion. The surface is divided into a temporal portion and a nasal portion by a principal meridian M which forms an umbilical line.

An eyeglass lens (ophthalmic lens) has in its upper section (far sight field) surface refraction values relative to far sight, and has in its lower section (near sight field) surface refraction values relative to near sight, and is divided into left and right sections by a line (main meridian), the points of which at least approximate geometric umbilical points (points of the same surface refraction value in the two main curvatures) in which a transition region (progression zone) is provided between the upper section and the lower section, in which the surface refraction values of the upper section change gradually into the surface refraction values of the lower section and in which all the lines of equal average refraction values of the upper section intersect the main meridian in the upper section and all the lines of the lower section intersect the main meridian in the lower section and all are extended on both ends to the periphery of the eyeglass lens. All lines of equal average surface refaction value of the progression zone intersect the main meridian in the progression zone and extend to the lens periphery. Such lens compensates for a missing power of accommodation of the human eye or one that is reduced in presbyopic age.
