The invention is directed to a method for the application of a liquid or pasty medium onto a traveling fiber material web. The medium is directly applied on at least one side of the traveling material web. The medium is pressed into the traveling material web after the medium is directly applied on the traveling material web.

An apparatus applies a liquid or viscid coating medium onto a moving material web, especially one made of paper or cardboard. A coating mechanism first applies the coating medium onto an applicator element or an applicator roll, which subsequently transfers the coating medium at a coating location onto the material web in the form of a coating layer. Furthermore, if so desired, a doctoring device can be positioned at a doctor station, adjacent to the coating location, on the downstream side relative to the movement of the material web for the purpose of smoothing and/or metering the coating. The coating apparatus incorporates an apparatus for the generation and/or supplying of a fluid, preferably steam. This apparatus is positioned adjacent to the coating location or to the doctor station on the downstream side relative to the movement L of the material web.

Apparatus for applying a liquid or viscid coating medium onto a moving fiber material web

A doctoring device for an apparatus designed to apply a liquid or viscid medium onto a moving base surface includes a metering unit having a coater rod and a coater rod bed. The metering unit is attached to the support beam and is positioned so that it can be pressed against the base surface. A pressure-elastic support arrangement is disposed between the coater beam and the coater rod bed. The coater rod bed is supported pressure-elastically by the support beam via the support arrangement in at least two support directions that are perpendicular to each other. The spring rate of the support arrangement is adjustable in at least one of the support directions. A preferred support arrangement includes pressure hoses which are assigned to each of the two support directions. The pressures in these hoses can be adjusted, independently from each other, to a pre-determined level via a pressure source. Unwanted deformation of the support beam in various directions relative to the base surface can thereby be compensated for. Furthermore, there is a large degree of freedom in the selection of the mounting position of the doctoring device relative to the base surface.

The invention relates to a method for roll cooling in paper machines with soft smoothing mechanisms. The object of the invention is to protect the soft roll from damage without having to increase the extent of edge trimming of the paper web. This is achieved in that the parts of the soft roll which respectively project beyond the width of the paper web are cooled by the application of a thin and sharply bounded water film. The corresponding devices for generating the water films are mounted in carriages which are displaceable along a transverse beam parallel to the roll.

A twin screen paper forming apparatus is provided having upper and lower screens moving in a first direction and wrapping around a portion of a leading forming roller positioned at the beginning of a forming zone where the upper and lower screens converge to form a twin screen. Calendering takes place in a calendering zone which operates under pressure with application of temperature and moisture. The desired smoothness is achieved with a correspondingly long dwell time of the material web in a correspondingly long calendering zone in view of the speed of web travel. A web which is still wet is guided between parallel heatable surfaces which are arranged on both sides of the web and face each other through the web and can each be pressed against the web. The surfaces are designed to form and hold a given precise contour of the calendering zone over its full length. One surface is constructed e.g. as a casing of a heated roller and the second surface is constructed as an endless flexible belt which can be pressed in a direction towards the roller casing by means of a concave supporting element. If wished, the web can be calendered on both sides with the method.

To achieve desired treatment results at both sides of a material web to be calendered, the material web is initially guided through a first nip formed between yieldable elastic surfaces confronting the throughpassing material web. In the first nip there is predominantly applied a relatively high pressure to the material web. Then the material web is guided through a successively arranged second nip formed between practically non-yieldable hard surfaces confronting the throughpassing material web. In the second nip there is applied, apart from pressure, in particular heat to the material web. The treatment result achieved in the first nip, namely the smoothness and glaze values of the treated material web, are augmented at both sides of the material web to achieve desired treatment effects.

In a headbox system for a papermaking machine with an adjustable distribution of the fiber stock suspension or pulp over the web width, the flow in the delivery slice is controlled in such a way that, across the web width, also the distribution of the fibers in respect of fiber orientation and quantity has a desired profile. For this purpose, the flow of the fiber stock suspension is controlled such that in the event of a change in the distribution of the fiber stock suspension across the web width, the horizontal component of the flow direction in the delivery slice remains, at all locations, always in the predetermined machine direction and thus transverse flows are avoided and the flow rate in the delivery slice has a predeterminate profile.
