A control unit for a system and a method of operating a control unit have modules that are activated. Before activation of a certain module, inquiries are made to detect cross-dependencies with other modules that have already been activated. To do so, a first storage device and a second storage device containing this information are provided. A scheduler prevents modules which interfere with one another from being activated simultaneously.

A system and method for generating a signal which indicates whether a motor vehicle containing such a system is operating on a rough road surface. The generated signal is based on the signals output by a sensor that measures the air-mass flow rate through the air-intake manifold of an internal-combustion engine. The invention is directed to a method for protecting a catalyzer against overheating. The method includes the steps of checking whether an injection valve no longer correctly closes by means of a conventional diagnostic process. If the condition is present that an injection valve no longer correctly closes, the air/fuel mixture for all cylinders is enriched and an overrun switchoff is inhibited. The method leads to the condition that in all load ranges, the oxygen quantity reaching the catalyzer is limited so that no damaging afterburning can take place. In this way, the catalyzer is protected against overheating and the affected vehicle is not disabled.

Circuitry is described for use with a fuel mixture control system of an internal combustion engine in which an oxygen sensor is located in the exhaust system and generates a generally bi-valued signal which is compared with a set-point voltage to indicate rich or lean mixtures.
