In various wellbore test systems, a probe mechanism that is extended to contact the formation within a wellbore, and retracted to allow movement of the test system, both rotationally and longitudinally, within the wellbore. A combination including monitoring an actuation fluid pressure used to actuate the probe mechanism to extend and to retract, and the use of one or more timers, provide information used to determine the position of the probe mechanism during the extension and retraction movements.

Systems and methods are provided for detecting leaks in a hydraulic system. An example method can include retrieving from memory, current signatures for a plurality of components in a hydraulic system; monitoring current consumption of a hydraulic motor during operation of the motor; determining, based on a comparison of the current consumption and current signature of the motor, an abnormal operating condition of the motor; collecting, based on the determination of the abnormal condition of the motor, current consumption data from the remaining components of the plurality of components; comparing the collected current consumption data to the current signatures corresponding to each of the remaining components of the plurality of components; and identifying, based on the comparison of the collected current data and current signatures, an abnormal operating condition for at least one of the remaining components of the plurality of components.

Downhole leak detection in a hydraulic system

Systems and methods for remotely closing a switch that is downhole in a wellbore are disclosed. The switch has a body with a first connector and a movable piston assembly with a second connector configured to mate with the first connector. The piston assembly has a first position wherein the first and second connectors are separated and a second position wherein the first and second connectors are mated. A spring is disposed between the body and the piston assembly and configured to urge the piston assembly toward the first position. When the fluid in the wellbore reaches a pressure above a threshold, the piston assembly will move to the second position thereby closing the switch.

Herein are described methods and systems for characterizing noise and noise level during downhole pressure testing and/or sampling operations. Methods and systems may identify and quantify the noise level of a formation pressure testing and/or sampling operations by measuring pressures with the probe pressure sensor and the tool pressure sensor with and without extension of the dual probe and closing the bubble point valve that connects the probe fluid passageway to the tool fluid passageway.

A drill bit includes a bit head defining a longitudinal axis, an adjustable cutter blade having a cutting element, and a blade ramp extending transversely relative to the longitudinal axis and arranged to radially adjust the adjustable cutter blade when the adjustable cutter blade moves axially along a side of the bit head. The drill bit further includes a gauge pad coupled to the adjustable cutter blade and a gauge pad ramp extending transversely relative to the longitudinal axis and arranged to radially adjust the gauge pad when the gauge pad moves axially along the side of the bit head.

A system for controlling a downhole component within a borehole, the system including a transfer assembly coupled between a rotatable component and the downhole component, the transfer assembly including a swash plate assembly configured to control the downhole component and a member configured to engage the swash plate assembly. The member is configured to move radially based upon a rotational speed of the rotatable component to selectively engage the swash plate assembly.

A rotary steerable drilling tool and a method according to which a universal joint is sealed. In one embodiment, the method includes providing the collar, the shaft, the universal joint, and first and second shoulders between which the universal joint is positioned; providing first and second self-energizing seals between the collar and the shaft on opposite sides of the universal joint; rotating the collar and the shaft; seating the first self-energizing seal against the first shoulder; and seating a second self-energizing seal against the second shoulder. In one embodiment, the universal joint includes a convex surface formed on the shaft; a first concave surface extending circumferentially about the shaft and adapted to mate with the convex surface to carry a first axial load; and a spacer ring defining a second concave surface adapted to mate with the convex surface to carry a second axial load.

A flow control device for use with a subterranean well, can include inner and outer flow trim sleeves. A radial spacing between the inner and outer flow trim sleeves increases in a direction of flow through the radial spacing. A method of regulating flow between an interior and an exterior of a tubular string in a well can include displacing at least one of inner and outer flow trim sleeves in a direction, a radial spacing between the inner and outer trim sleeves increasing in the direction. Another flow control device can include inner and outer flow trim sleeves, and a flow area through the radial spacing increases in a direction of flow through the radial spacing.
