A cryocooler assembly for cooling a field winding of an electrical machine having an axis of rotation is provided. The assembly includes a cryocooler and a reservoir coupled in flow communication to the cryocooler and configured to contain a cooling agent. A flow assembly is coupled in flow communication to the reservoir. The flow assembly includes a first flow loop coupled in flow communication to the reservoir; a second flow loop coupled in flow communication to the reservoir; and a plurality of flow members coupled in flow communication to the first flow loop and the second flow loop and coupled to the field winding. Each flow member is configured to thermosiphon the cooling agent in a first state from the reservoir and in a second state to the reservoir.

Cooling assembly for electrical machines and methods of assembling the same

A system for maintaining a high vacuum in a vacuum enclosure such as cryostat, for example, is described. The system includes a high-vacuum pump having an input that is connected to the cryostat and an output. A vacuum vessel is connected to the output of the high-vacuum pump. A second vacuum pump is connectable to the vacuum vessel. The system is operated such that the high-vacuum pump maintains the cryostat at a high vacuum and the second vacuum pump is periodically operated to maintain the pressure of the vacuum vessel below a threshold pressure. The second vacuum pump may be either permanently connected to, or removable from, the vacuum vessel. The vacuum vessel acts to maintain the output of the high-vacuum pump within a suitable pressure range. This removes the need for the output of the high-vacuum pump to be connected to a continuously operating, second-stage vacuum pump. Furthermore, the second vacuum pump is only required to be operated periodically in order to maintain the pressure in the vacuum vessel below the threshold pressure.

Methods and systems for maintaining a high vacuum in a vacuum enclosure

In one embodiment, a cryocooler assembly for cooling a heat load is provided. The cryocooler assembly includes a vacuum vessel surrounding the heat load and a cryocooler at least partially inserted into the vacuum vessel, the cryocooler including a coldhead. The assembly further includes an actuator coupled to the cryocooler. The actuator is configured to translate the cryocooler coldhead into thermal engagement with the heat load and to maintain constant pressure of the coldhead against the heat load to facilitate maintaining thermal engagement with the heat load as the heat load shrinks during a cool down process.

Remote actuated cryocooler for superconducting generator and method of assembling the same

Insulation for a cryogenic component is described. The insulation includes an inner portion formed of a multi-layer insulating material comprising alternating layers of metalized polymer film and polymer netting. An outer supporting mesh surrounds the inner portion and is formed of stainless steel. The insulation is particularly suitable for insulating cryogenic components that move during operation since the supporting mesh acts to support the inner portion against damage caused by forces resulting from motion of the cryogenic component.

The subject matter herein generally relates to electrical generators and motors, and more specifically, to electrical turbo-generators. In an embodiment, an electrical system includes a circuit. The circuit includes one or more rotating power delivery assemblies comprising a plurality of sliding surfaces that deliver power to a rotating load. The circuit also includes one or more radio frequency current transformers (RFCTs) that measure radio frequency (RF) signals corresponding to arcing events in the one or more rotating power delivery assemblies. The electrical system also includes a processor that receives the measurements from the one or more RFCTs and determines a health value of the circuit based, at least in part, on the received measurements.

Systems and methods for monitoring the health of an electrical system

A collector monitoring system is disclosed. In one embodiment, the collector monitoring system includes: a sensor connected to an interior surface of a dynamoelectric machine housing, the sensor for sensing a condition of a collector during operation of a dynamoelectric machine; and a diagnostic system operably connected to the sensor, the diagnostic system configured to: obtain data about the condition of the collector from the sensor; compare the data about the condition of the collector with a predetermined condition threshold; and provide an indicator of a collector fault in response to the data about the condition of the collector exceeding the predetermined condition threshold.
