A flexible nonwoven mat of polymeric fibers is liquid water transmission resistant and is particularly well suited for use as a prefabricated building construction underlayment. The polymeric fibers may be standard polymeric fibers or sheathed polymeric fibers that have fiber sheaths with a lower softening point temperature than the softening point temperature of the fiber cores. Preferably, the polymeric fibers are spunbond fibers and are bonded together through the application of heat and pressure. Where the fibers are sheathed fibers, interstices of the nonwoven mat are at least partially filled by a portion of the polymeric material of the sheaths that is dispersed into the interstices to reduce the porosity of the mat. In certain embodiments, the polymeric fibers on the top major surface of the mat are coated with a hydrophobic binder coating material, which is overlaid with a water repellant coating material, such as a filled asphalt, modified bitumen, or a non-asphaltic polymeric film, to increase the liquid water impermeability and enhance other physical properties of the mat.

Nonwoven polymeric fiber mat composites and method

A prefabricated asphalt-based waterproof roofing membrane for use in a multi-ply asphalt-based commercial roofing system, e.g. a cap sheet that forms the exposed layer of a multi-ply built-up roofing system, is manufactured at a factory to have a highly reflective non-asphalt based elastomeric top coating layer with an upper surface that meets current EPA Energy Star requirements. Preferably, a polymer primer layer is interposed between the highly reflective coating layer and an asphalt saturated and coated reinforcing substrate to keep oils and other colored components in the asphalt from exuding into the highly reflective coating layer.

Highly reflective asphalt-based roofing membrane

A perlite-based insulation board includes, by dry weight, between about 50% and about 76% expanded perlite; between about 15% and about 45% fibers; between about 1% and about 5% starch; between about 2% and about 9% bituminous material; and about 0% to about 3% alum. The fibers are between about 50% and about 95% by dry weight recycled newsprint fibers and between about 5% and about 50% by dry weight virgin cellulose fibers, such as flax and/or peanut hull fibers. In one embodiment, the virgin cellulose fibers are, by dry weight, between about 10% and 40% flax fibers and about 60% and 90% peanut hull fibers.

Perlite-based insulation board

A floor covering material with enhanced chemical, particularly acid, resistance containing refractory oxide, asphaltite, high oil asphalt, asphalt with a softening point in the range of about 210.degree.-230.degree. F., reinforcing fiber, crystalline polyolefin polymer and optionally, non-crystalline polyolefin polymer. The disclosed floor covering material is single-layered.
