With the subject invention, a container for an injection device with an injection needle is provided. The container includes a body having a compartment formed therein to accommodate the injection device in both a pre-use and a post-use condition. The body defines a first opening through which the injection device in its pre-use condition may be accessed, and the body defines a second opening into which the injection device may be directed in its post-use condition. A closure is provided for closing the first opening. The container also includes a retainer for retaining the injection device in the container in its post-use condition preventing access to the injection needle after the injection device has been used to administer an injection. Advantageously, the container of the subject invention provides not only a pre-use packaging for the injection device, but also a post-use sharps container for the injection device.

A drug delivery device is provided herein which includes a tubular body defining an opening. A drug cartridge is also provided having a distal end larger in diameter than the opening. With the drug cartridge being inserted into the tubular body in a use position, the distal end of the drug cartridge is located at least partially externally of the tubular body. The medical pen injector of the subject invention further includes an adaptor engageable with the body. The adaptor encompasses the distal end of the drug cartridge with the drug cartridge being in the use position. The adaptor includes features for mounting a needle assembly thereto. Advantageously, with the subject invention, a drug cartridge having a large distal end may be accommodated with a drug delivery device, e.g., a pen injector type device.

A medical injector is provided herein which includes first and second body portions each having a longitudinal axis and configured to couple at a coupling. The medical injector also includes an axially-displaceable plunger; biasing element for advancing the plunger a predetermined distance; and, a releasable retainer for releasably retaining the plunger in a first state against the force of the biasing element. In an initial state, the axes of the first and second body portions are not aligned and the plunger is in the first state. In a coupled state, the axes of the first and second body portions are axially aligned, and the releasable retainer releases the plunger, thereby allowing the biasing element to advance the plunger the predetermined distance. Advantageously, the subject invention provides a medical injector having an automated plunger drive which is triggered upon assembly of the pen injector, thereby minimizing premature or failed activations.

With the subject invention, a container for an injection device with an injection needle is provided. The container includes a body having a compartment formed therein to accommodate the injection device in both a pre-use and a post-use condition. The body defines a first opening through which the injection device in its pre-use condition may be accessed, and the body defines a second opening into which the injection device may be directed in its post-use condition. A closure is provided for closing the first opening. The container also includes a retainer proximate the second opening for retaining the injection device in the container in its post-use condition preventing access to the injection needle after the injection device has been used to administer an injection. Advantageously, the container of the subject invention may accommodate an injection device both before and after use thereby providing not only a pre-use packaging for the injection device, but also a post-use sharps container for the injection device.

A tray for positioning elongated objects each having a body and a flange. The tray includes a plate with openings and bearing surfaces. At least one first bearing surface is near a first opening and located at a first distance from the plate of the tray, and at least one second bearing surface is near a second opening adjacent the first opening and located at a second distance from the plate of the tray. The second distance is different from the first distance. The first and second openings are located at a distance with respect to one another such that the flange of a first elongated object engaged in one of these openings is able to partially overlap the flange of a second elongated object engaged in the other of these openings without contact between the flange of the first elongated object and the flange of the second elongated object.

A cartridge or injector for holding and mixing a medical product is provided herein including a tubular body having a cylindrical wall having first and second opposing ends. The wall includes inner and outer surfaces with the inner surface having a generally constant cross-section along at least a drug mixing area. A first stopper is slidably disposed within the wall between the first and second ends, the first stopper defining a liquid-tight seal with the inner surface. A second stopper is slidably disposed within the wall between the first stopper and the first end, the second stopper defining a liquid-tight seal with the inner surface. A flexible insert is disposed at or in proximity to the second end, the insert forming a liquid-tight seal with the wall, the insert being pierceable by a medical needle or other piercing instrument. A rigid retainer is fixed to the wall having an opening therein for providing access to the insert for piercing by a medical needle. The insert extends into the retainer and forms a liquid-tight seal across the opening. Advantageously, with the subject invention, a reconstitution assembly may be provided which has a sufficiently large distal opening during assembly which allows a dry component to be introduced into the device in a dry state.
