A guide pole fitting seal for use on floating roof tanks that incorporates a well gasket, pole sleeve, pole wiper, float and float wiper that may be used with guide poles to control emissions from the guide pole fitting. The guide pole seal may permit the product level in the tank to be measured and sampled from inside of the guide pole by removing the float during these operations.

In the method of the invention, an unknown mass fraction (F) of solid cryogen in a stored cryogenic refrigeration system is determined. The method includes the steps of adding mass (T) of a trace substance which is soluble in the liquid phase of the system. The total mass amount (M) of the cryogen in the system is determined at the time of charging the system. The initial mass concentration (C.sub.I) of the trace substance is determined by dividing (T) by (M). During operation of the stored cryogenic refrigeration system, a small sample of the liquid phase cryogen is extracted from the system. The sample is analyzed to determine the new concentration (C.sub.N) of the trace substance in the sample. The new concentration (C.sub.N) of the sample is dependent on the amount of solid cryogen which has been produced in the system. Thereafter, the mass fraction (F) of solid cryogen in the system is determined by solving the equation:

A method of and apparatus for testing the effectiveness against leakage of a seal in a gap between two surfaces which comprises positioning and securing an envelope to span the seal and gap and extend to the two surfaces to thereby form an enclosed cavity or space defined by the two surfaces, the seal therebetween and the envelope; feeding a gas stream into the cavity and removing the gas stream from the cavity; and analyzing the removed gas stream for any potential contaminant which leaks past the seal in the gap. A liquefied gas storage tank having insulated vertical walls and an insulated top, said tank being located in and surrounded by a body of water with the exterior water level below the top of the tank walls, the tank interior space containing a layer of water in communication with the body of water so that water can be supplied to and be removed from the tank, an insulating layer floating on the water layer in the tank, and a liquefied gas floating on the insulating layer. The insulating layer can include a float which extends over the water layer except for a rim space between the periphery of the float and the tank walls, and an insulating liquid in the rim space which has a specific gravity less than water and higher than the liquefied gas, and with the insulating liquid being essentially immiscible with water and remaining liquid at the liquefied gas storage temperature.
