At least partially hydrolyzed chlorosulfonated polyolefin elastomers containing 0.5-10 weight percent chlorine and 0.25 to 5 weight percent sulfur are prepared from low density polyethylene or from linear ethylene/alpha-olefin copolymer base resins having a ratio of weight average molecular weight (Mw) to number average molecular weight (Mn) less than 3.5.

Partially hydrolyzed chlorosulfonated polyolefin elastomers

Partially neutralized chlorosulfonated polyolefin elastomers containing 0.5-10 weight percent chlorine and 0.25 to 5 weight percent sulfur are prepared from polyolefin elastomer base resins selected from the group consisting of propylene/ethylene copolymers, ethylene/propylene/diene copolymers, isobutylene/diene copolymers, isobutylene homopolymers, hydrogenated styrene/butadiene block copolymers and hydrogenated styrene/isoprene block copolymers.

Partially neutralized chlorosulfonated polyolefin elastomers

At least partially neutralized chlorosulfonated ethylene/alpha-olefin elastomers containing 0.5-10 weight percent chlorine and 0.25 to 5 weight percent sulfur are prepared from ethylene/alpha-olefin copolymer base resins having a ratio of weight average molecular weight (Mw) to number average molecular weight (Mn) less than 3.5.

Non-discolored chlorinated and chlorosulfonated olefin polymers having low levels of residual solvent are prepared in a process wherein monofluorobenzene is used as a reaction medium and isolation of the polymer is by means of a series of vented closed loop extruders. The process also results in suppression of the formation of monochloromonofluorobenzene as a by-product.

Process for preparation of chlorinated and chlorosulfonated olefin

Self-stabilized resin latexes are provided which contain carboxylate salts of post-chlorinated ethylene copolymers having chlorine contents of 20-60 weight percent. The ethylene copolymer salts are derived from ethylene/acrylic acid or ethylene/methacrylic acid copolymers containing 1.5-12 mole percent copolymerized units of acrylic or methacrylic acid. The latexes are particularly useful for preparing resorcinol formaldehyde adhesives.

Stable chlorinated resin latex

A stabilized chlorinated resin latex comprising a mixture in water of A) 50-95 wt. %, based on the weight of A and B, of a chlorinated resin, substantially free of acid moieties, having a chlorine content of 15-70 wt. %, and B) 5-50 wt. %, based on the weight of A and B, of a salt of a water-insoluble C.sub.2 -C.sub.12 alpha, beta- unsaturated olefin copolymer which contains at least 2 mole % acid moieties and is compatible with the chlorinated resin.

Stabilized chlorinated resin latex

A blend of 80-99 weight percent chlorinated polyethylene containing 15-60 weight percent chlorine with 20-1 weight percent of polyethylene containing up to 5 weight percent chlorine and 0.5-5 weight percent of a grafted unsaturated dicarboxylic acid or anhydride is disclosed. The preferred chlorinated polyethylene is made by chlorinating a blend of high and low density polyethylene.

Blends of grafted polyethylene with chlorinated polyethylene

A process is disclosed for producing a blend of chlorinated low density polyethylene and chlorinated high density polyethylene wherein the polyethylenes are placed in a solvent and the temperature raised to a point where the low density polyethylene goes into solution and the high density polyethylene does not go into solution. The low density polyethylene is chlorinated up to the desired level and then the temperature is raised to dissolve the high density polyethylene and chlorination of both polyethylenes is continued to the desired level.

Process for bimodal chlorination of polyethylene

An uncured chlorinated polyethylene elastomer having a molecular weight distribution of about 6-13, as determined by the ratio of Mw/Mn where Mw represents the weight average molecular weight and Mn represents the number average molecular weight, a chlorine content of about 20-28% by weight, a Mooney viscosity value, determined according to ASTM D 1646-81, ML.sub.(1+4) at 100.degree. C., of about 15-36; and, optionally, a sulfur content of about 0.2-2% by weight and a process for their preparation.
