An aqueous bath suitable for electrodepositing zinc and alloys of zinc including zinc-nickel, zinc-cobalt, zinc-nickel-cobalt, zinc-iron, zinc-iron-nickel, zinc-iron-cobalt, and zinc-nickel-cobalt-iron containing a brightening amount of an AABB-type polyamide brightener in an amount effective to produce an electrodeposit of the desired brightness. The invention further contemplates the process of electrodepositing zinc and zinc alloys of the foregoing types on a conductive substrate employing the aqueous electrolyte.

A non-cyanide zinc electroplating bath containing an effective brightening and leveling amount of a leveling and brightening agent comprising a bath soluble butyl nicotinate sulfate or sulfonated quaternary salt. The electroplating bath may further advantageously incorporate an effective brightening amount of a polyether compound as a supporting brightening agent and an effective leveling amount of methane sulfonic acid and salts thereof as a supporting leveling agent. A non-cyanide acid or substantially neutral zinc electroplating bath and zinc plating process employing said bath which contains an effective amount of a brightening and leveling agent, and which comprises a bath soluble quaternary compound formed by the reaction of heterocyclics with an alkylating agent selected from the group consisting of dialkyl sulfates, alkyl alkane sulfonates and alkyl arene sulfonates. The present invention is directed to an aqueous bath for the electrodeposition of bright metal deposits, and is more particularly concerned with a bath composition which provides upon the basis metal an electrodeposit having improved brightness, superior adhesion to the substrate, and as well, a condition of ductility markedly better than that obtained from certain prior art baths. A composition and method for electrodepositing ductile, bright, well leveled copper deposits from an aqueous acidic copper plating bath having dissolved therein from about 0.04 to about 1000 milligrams per liter of a poly (alkanol quaternary ammonium salt) formed as the reaction product of a polyalkanolamine with an alkylating or quaternization agent. The polyalkanolamine constituent typically is formed as the reaction product of a polyalkylenimine (e.g. polyethylenimine) with an alkylene oxide.

The instant invention is directed to an aqueous bath for the electrodeposition of bright metal deposits, and more particularly to a bath composition which provides upon the basis metal an electrodeposit having improved brightness, particularly in low current density areas, and as well, a condition of ductility markedly better than that which characterizes certain prior art baths. The electroplating bath composition of this invention embodies a polyethylenimine having the general empirical formula --[C.sub.2 H.sub.5 N].sub.x --, and a sulfonating agent for the polyethylenimine, whereby there is obtained a reaction product which contains nitrogen substituted sulfamate groups as an integral part of the polymer chain. The nitrogen substituted sulfamate unit of the reaction product is represented by the formula: ##STR1## where, M = H, Li, Na, K, or, NH.sub.4. The ratio of these nitrogen substituted sulfamate units to amino units, --[CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 NH]--, in the reaction product is determined by the molar ratio of the polymer repeat unit, --[C.sub.2 H.sub.5 N]--, to sulfonating agent in the reaction.
