Methods of making substantially phase-pure and thermally stable crystalline alumina compositions stabilized with an oxide of silicon, germanium, phosphorus, arsenic or a mixture thereof. Also provided are crystalline alumina compositions and catalyst supports made using these methods.

Stabilized crystalline alumina compositions

The instant invention provides an olefin polymerization catalyst comprising chromium and titanium supported on silica. The catalyst is prepared with a low sodium ammonia-stabilized silica sol which has an average silicate particle size of from about 2 to about 6 nm. The catalyst produces polyethylene or a copolymer of ethylene and another olefin selected from the group consisting of the C.sub.3 to C.sub.8 mono 1-olefins, the polymer having a high melt index and a narrow molecular weight distribution.

This invention relates to a ceramic article having a crystalline and continuous silicon nitride phase, iron and a rare earth oxide, the article having a surface area of at least 3.5 m.sup.2 /g, a thermal expansion coefficient smaller than 6.times.10.sup.-6 m/m/.degree.C. measured in the range 20.degree.-800.degree. C. and a porosity of at least 30%. The ceramic article may also contain a discrete porous oxide phase such as alumina, aluminates, silica, spinel, titania, zirconia, zeolites and mixtures thereof. Further, the porous oxide may also contain a metal oxide such as barium oxide, nickel oxide, iron oxide, rare earth oxides and mixtures thereof. The ceramic article may be used as a catalyst support. Methods of manufacturing the ceramic article are also disclosed.

High surface area silicon nitride and use thereof

High purity alumina with a low sodium content and with a friable, easily ball milled structure is produced in this invention through a modified sol-gel procedure which includes digestion of the contaminant containing aluminum metal with hydrochloric acid in the presence of excess aluminum, removal of the contaminants, seeding the resulting sol with high purity alumina, drying to a solid, and then calcining said seeded sol solids to produce said high purity alpha alumina.

Process for preparing high purity alpha-alumina

A process for reforming a naphtha feedstock is disclosed. The reforming process is effected at reforming conditions in contact with a catalyst comprising a platinum group metal component and a Group IV-A metal component composited with an alumina support wherein said support is prepared by admixing an alpha alumina monohydrate with an aqueous ammoniacal solution having a pH of at least about 7.5 to form a stable suspension. A salt of a strong acid, e.g., aluminum nitrate, is commingled with the suspension to form an extrudable paste or dough. On extrusion, the extrudate is dried and calcined to form said alumina support.

Isomerizable hydrocarbons including paraffins, cycloparaffins, olefins and alkyl aromatics are isomerized by contacting the hydrocarbon at isomerization conditions with a catalytic composite comprising a platinum group metal on an alpha-alumina monohydrate support wherein said support is prepared by admixing an alpha-alumina monohydrate with an aqueous ammoniacal solution having a pH of at least about 7.5 to form a stable suspension and commingling said suspension with a salt of a strong acid to form an extrudable paste or dough. Upon extrusion, the extrudate is dried and calcined to form said alumina support.

Isomerizable hydrocarbons including paraffins, cycloparaffins, olefins and alkyl aromatics are isomerized by contacting the hydrocarbon at isomerization conditions with a catalytic composite comprising a platinum group metal on an alpha-alumina monohydrate support wherein said support is prepared by admixing an alpha-alumina monohydrate with an aqueous amoniacal solution having a pH of at least about 7.5 to form a stable suspension and commingling said suspension with a salt of a strong acid to form an extrudable paste or dough. Upon extrusion, the extrudate is dried and calcined to form said alumina support.

Paraffinic hydrocarbon isomerization process

Hydrocarbons are converted by contacting them at hydrocarbon conversion conditions with a selective sulfided acidic multimetallic catalytic composite comprising a combination of catalytically effective amounts of a platinum group component, a sulfided rhenium component and a halogen component with a porous carrier material formed from Ziegler alumina. The platinum group component, sulfided rhenium component and halogen component are present in the multimetallic catalytic composite in an amount, calculated on an elemental basis, corresponding to about 0.01 to about 2 wt. % platinum group metal, about 0.01 to about 2 wt. % rhenium, about 0.1 to about 3.5 wt. % halogen and sulfur in an amount at least sufficient to provide an atomic ratio of sulfur to rhenium of at least about 0.5:1. These metallic components are, moreover, relatively uniformly dispersed throughout the Ziegler alumina carrier material in carefully controlled oxidation state such that substantially all of the platinum group metal is present therein in the elemental metallic state and a substantial portion of the rhenium present therein is maintained in a sulfided state. A key feature of the hydrocarbon conversion process using the subject catalyst involves the continuous maintenance of the sulfided state of the rhenium component for the duration of the hydrocarbon conversion process.

Selectively sulfided acidic multimetallic catalytic composite

Isomerizable hydrocarbons are isomerized using a selectively sulfided acidic multimetallic catalytic composite comprising a combination of catalytically effective amounts of a platinum group component, a sulfided rhenium component and a halogen component with a porous carrier material formed from Ziegler alumina.

Hydrocarbon isomerization process

Hydrocarbons are converted by contacting them at hydrocarbon conversion conditions with a selectively sulfided acidic multimetallic catalytic composite comprising a combination of catalytically effective amounts of a platinum group component, a sulfided rhenium component and a halogen component with a porous carrier material formed from Ziegler alumina. The platinum group component, sulfided rhenium component and halogen component are present in the multimetallic catalytic composite in an amount, calculated on an elemental basis, corresponding to about 0.01 to about 2 wt. % platinum group metal, about 0.01 to about 2 wt. % rhenium, about 0.1 to about 3.5 wt. % halogen and sulfur in an amount at least sufficient to provide an atomic ratio of sulfur to rhenium of at least about 0.5:1. These metallic components are, moreover, relatively uniformly dispersed throughout the Ziegler alumina carrier material in carefully controlled oxidation state such that substantially all of the platinum group metal is present therein in the elemental metallic state and a substantial portion of the rhenium present therein is maintained in a sulfided state. A key feature of the hydrocarbon conversion process using the subject catalyst involves the continuous maintenance of the sulfided state of the rhenium component for the duration of the hydrocarbon conversion process. A specific example of the type of hydrocarbon conversion process disclosed herein is a process for the catalytic reforming of a low octane gasoline fraction wherein the gasoline fraction and a hydrogen stream are contacted with the instant selectively sulfided acidic multimetallic catalyst at reforming conditions.

Hydrocarbon conversion with a selectively sulfided acidic multimetallic

A process for the catalytic reforming of a naphtha fraction is disclosed. A naphtha fraction and hydrogen are commingled and passed in contact with an alumina-supported reforming catalyst at reforming conditions. The alumina support is characterized by a novel method of preparation affording an improved reforming process. The preparation comprises admixing an alpha-alumina monohydrate with an alkaline solution having a pH of at least about 7.5 and forming a stable suspension. A salt of a strong acid, or a solution of a salt of a strong acid, is admixed with the suspension to form a paste or dough which is subsequently extruded, dried and calcined to form said alumina support.

Reforming of a naphtha fraction in contact with an  alumina-supported

An alumina composition particularly useful as a catalyst support or carrier material is disclosed. The alumina is characterized by a method of preparation which comprises admixing an alpha-alumina monohydrate with an alkaline solution having a pH of at least about 7.5 and forming a stable suspension. A salt of a strong acid is commingled with the suspension to form a paste or dough which is subsequently formed into extrudates, and dried and calcined.

Method of preparation of alumina catalyst support or carrier material

A method of preparing an extruded catalyst composition. An acidic alumina hydrosol is admixed with a dry mixture consisting essentially of a finely divided alumina and a finely divided crystalline aluminosilicate. The resulting mixture is extruded, dried and calcined to yield a catalyst particularly useful for the selective reforming of a naphtha fraction to produce a high octane reformate product and a liquid petroleum gas.
