A gas turbine includes a change-over valve having a rotatable part and a static part. The valve is disposed between upstream and downstream compressors of the engine for selectively directing flows from the upstream compressor and an auxiliary inlet to the downstream compressor or an auxiliary outlet, the downstream static part of the valve being formed as a structural element of the engine casing from which extends forwardly a support member which carries bearings for supporting the forward rotating part of the valve and the casing of the compressor.

Dual cycle gas turbine engines

A mechanism 25 for preventing a turbine rotor 14 exceeding a predetermined speed in the event that a shaft 24 connecting the turbine rotor 14 to a compressor rotor 12 of the engine breaks and releases its torsional and axial constraint on the turbine rotor. The mechanism 25 comprises a segmented nozzle guide vane assembly 26 downstream of a stage of the turbine rotor 14. Each of the segments 26 is pivotally mounted (hinge pins 40) on an outer casing 34 at a region adjacent a radially outer upstream end of each segment 26. The structure of the engine on which the radially innermost ends of the segments 26 are mounted includes a releasable means 46. When the structure 46 is struck by the turbine rotor 14 the innermost ends of the segments 26 are released and allowed to swing rearwards and outwards about the pivotal attachment of the segments 26 to the outer casing 34. The upstream outer ends of the segments 26 are retained in the path of rotation of the blades of the turbine rotor 14 so that they collide with the blades and decelerate the turbine rotor 14.

A stator blade for a gas turbine engine comprises a stack of laminar sections and means adapted to resiliently hold the sections together in compression to allow for differential expansion between the stack and supporting structure.

Blade for a gas turbine engine

A flanged joint structure for enabling a first member made from a fibre re-inforced composite material to be bolted to a second member includes means defining on the first member a continuous flange extending at right angles to the member, and an intermediate connecting portion which is bonded to the first member and which is bonded to the flange along a line which alternately passes above and below the mean plane of the loads applied by the bolts. This construction minimizes bending loads in the flange.
