A sand fallback tool having an outer tubular body with proximal end, a distal end, a chamber therebetween surrounding an axis extending from the proximal end through the distal end, a tubular flow divider supported within the chamber to divide at least a portion of the chamber of the outer tubular body into a central passage along the axis and an annular passage radially intermediate an exterior of the tubular flow divider and an interior of the outer tubular body, and an unobstructed axial settling path from the proximal connector into the central passage. One embodiment further includes a tubular extension coupled to the proximal connector and extending along the axis to terminate at a distal end of the tubular extension received within a proximal end of the tubular flow divider to provide an 'S'-shaped flow pathway intermediate the annular passage and the proximal connector of the outer tubular body.

Sand fallback submersible pump protection apparatus

A downhole separator () separates gas from well fluids which are pumped intermittently to the surface. The separator includes an outer tubular housing () and an inner flow tube () for passing well fluids to the surface after separation of the gas from the well fluids. A vortex flow generator or spiral gas separator () imparts a helical flow to effect separation of the gas from the well fluids. Gas from the gas chamber flows upward past the vortex flow generator when the pump is not pumping well fluids to the surface.

Downhole gas separator and method

A combined washover and retrieval device (30, 30A) for connection to the lower end of a tubular string (14, 14A) including an outer washover pipe (22, 22A) and an inner retrieval tool (36, 36A). Retrieval tool (36, 36A) includes an upper sub (30, 30A) secured at its upper end to a tubular support (23, 23A). In a preferred embodiment of FIGS. 1-3, the sub (30) has a plurality of ports (35) to permit the upward flow of fluid with entrained soil and debris through the inner annulus (38) and ports (35) at the upper end of the annulus (38) to bypass the retrieval tool (36). Another embodiment illustrated in FIGS. 4-7 has a plurality of shear pins (31A) connecting the washover pipe (22A) to the sub (30A). Pins (31A) are sheared upon washover pipe (22A) abutting the packer (16A) under a predetermined weight from the tubing string (14A) to permit downward relative movement of retrieval tool (36A) for connection to the fish (18A).

Combined washover and retrieval device

A combined washover and retrieval device (30, 30A) for connection to the lower end of a tubular string (14, 14A) including an outer washover pipe (22, 22A) and an inner retrieval tool (36, 36A). Retrieval tool (36, 36A) includes an upper sub (30, 30A) secured at its upper end to a tubular support (23, 23A). In a preferred embodiment of FIG. 1-3, the sub (30) has a plurality of ports (35) to permit the upward flow of fluid with entrained soil and debris through the inner annulus (38) and ports (35) at the upper end of the annulus (38) to bypass the retrieval tool (36). Another embodiment illustrated in FIGS. 4-7 has a plurality of shear pins (31A) connecting the washover pipe (22A) to the sub (30A). Pins (31A) are sheared upon washover pipe (22A) abutting the packer (16A) under a predetermined weight from the tubing string (14A) to permit downward relative movement of retrieval tool (36A) for connection to the fish (18A).

A separation device or desander (18) is positioned in a bore hole for separation of solid particles from well fluids and includes outer and inner concentric members (20 and 22) defining an annulus (30) therebetween. A spiral guide (32) is positioned in annulus (30) between the concentric tubular members (20, 22). A wear structure comprising the present invention includes a flat (38) in the outer wall (27) of the outer tubular member (20) to provide a reduced thickness wall portion thereat. Upon wear from abrasive solid particles, and opening (40) is formed at the reduced thickness cutaway portion defined by flat (38). A sleeve (46) may be mounted within the outer tubular member (20) below the inner tubular member (22).

Wear structure for bore hole separation device

A portable apparatus and method for catching and containing fluids leaked from a wellhead (10) of an oil and gas well including a tank structure (32) having a pair of tank sections (34, 36) interconnected in surrounding relation about the wellhead (10) to catch and contain fluids from the wellhead (10). An apron or skirt (64) is secured about the wellhead (10) to deflect fluids into the tank sections (34, 36). A pipe support or rack (68) is positioned in one of the tank sections (36) and a splash board (72) is detachably connected to the tank section (36) adjacent the pipe support (68) to deflect fluids from lower open ends of pipe sections (70) being removed from the well. The tank structure (32) is portable and utilized with a well rig (20) beneath the rig platform (22) extending over the well and the tank sections (34, 36) are arranged to fit within each other for easy transport.

Apparatus and method for containing fluids around a wellhead

A downhole tool for removing sand from a well bore has an elongated tubular member with four sections. A one-way valve is located between the upper first and second sections. A second one-way valve is located between the third and fourth sections, while a third one-way valve is in the fourth lower section. The second and third sections are formed into a piston assembly which when reciprocated moves fluid in the well bore from the fourth section to the first section in an incremental fashion. Each piston stroke traps portions of fluid at different locations along the tubular member because of the one-way construction of the valves, and moves that trapped portion incrementally upwardly within the device. Sand is accumulated in the second and fourth sections of the member, and the sand in the fourth section is prevented from backflowing into the piston section to foul the pump. The tubular member is constructed to allow for a full flowing flow in contrast to obstructed flow and a port in the lower portion of the tool enables relatively clean fluid from the well bore to be injected internally of the tool spaced from its bottom inlet to dilute the debris-laden fluid to further enable the debris-laden fluid to be more readily conducted through the tool pump portion without clogging the tool. A retrievable packer may be lowered with the device on a well string or wireline to isolate a portion of the well bore for accomplishing desired operations in the isolated well bore portion with the device.
