An example implementation may involve a media playback system detecting two or more playback devices of a given type. The implementation may further involve transmitting, to a particular playback device of the detected playback devices, an instruction that causes the particular playback device to emit a given sound. The implementation may also involve receiving an identification of the particular playback device and displaying, via a graphical interface, one or more prompts to join the particular playback device into the media playback system.

Multiple-device setup

An example implementation may involve a media playback system receiving message(s) indicating that a first playback device is available for configuration into a zone of a media playback system. The implementation may further involve identifying one or more second playback devices and determining that the first playback device and the one or more second playback devices are compatible with certain bonded zone configurations. The implementation may also involve detecting selection of a bonded zone configuration from among the compatible bonded zone configurations and displaying an indication of one or more particular second playback devices that are compatible with the selected bonded zone configuration. The implementation may involve detecting selection of at least one particular second playback device from among the one or more particular second playback devices and causing the first playback device to form the selected bonded zone configuration with the selected at least one particular second playback device.

Intelligent group identification

An example implementation involves a first playback device receiving, from a remote server over a wide area network, a configuration table corresponding to a secure network comprising the first playback device. The first playback device determines that the configuration table comprises an entry corresponding to a second playback device that is not part of the secure network. The first playback device listens, over an unsecure local area network, for transmissions from playback devices, and, while listening, receives a first message from the second playback device, the first message indicating that the second playback device is available to join the secure network. In response to receiving the first message, the first playback device transmits, to the second playback device over the unsecure local area network, a second message comprising configuration information for the second playback device to join the secure network.

Automatic configuration of household playback devices

Embodiments are provided for causing a playback device to be automatically added to a secure network for rendering media in synchrony with other devices in the secure network. The playback device may, without any input from a user, transmit a first message indicating that the playback device is available to join the network. Upon receiving the first message, a device already in the secure network may transmit to the playback device a second message indicating security parameters for joining the network. The playback device may then join the secure network accordingly. Embodiments are also provided for causing a playback device to be automatically configured, without any input from a user. Another device in the secure network may receive a configuration table indicating setup information for the playback device, and may subsequently transmit the setup information to the playback device and cause the playback device to be configured accordingly.
