A restraint system operating method includes, among other things, when a detachable door is attached to a vehicle, operating a restraint system of a vehicle at least in part in response to a signal from a door sensor of the detachable door. When the detachable door is detached from the vehicle, the method operates the restraint system of the vehicle without relying on the signal from the door sensor.

A shield housing mounts a yaw sensor onto a trailer structural element. A shield body defines a sensor cavity within a closed bottom, an open face, and a perimeter wall with a side opening. A mounting post extends from the closed bottom into the sensor cavity and is adapted to affix the sensor at a predetermined orientation in the shield body. A pair of side wings extend laterally from the perimeter wall. Each side wing has a respective groove adapted to retain a respective strap loop tensioned over the groove and the structural element. In one preferred embodiment, the perimeter wall may have a base edge, and the side wings may each have a base surface opposite the grooves. The base edge and the base surfaces may have a contoured profile configured to orient the housing in a predetermined direction on the structural element.

A computer determines a gap distance behind a front seat. In response to detecting an impact of the vehicle, the computer selectively controls deployment of an airbag based at least in part on a gap distance behind the front seat. The computer may determine the gap distance based on seat position data, image data, weight data, triangulation data, and proximity data. The computer may be incorporated into an airbag deployment control system for deploying the airbag behind the front seat.

A trailer yaw sensing apparatus is provided. The trailer yaw sensing apparatus includes a housing, a yaw sensor, and a docking station. The housing is configured for installation on a trailer. The housing defines apertures that are configured to engage fasteners for mounting yaw sensors in a plurality of orientations. The yaw sensor includes an external casing and is disposed within the housing. The docking station is affixed to the housing and is configured to receive a trailer-to-vehicle electrical connector.

A mounting system for a control module in a vehicle comprises a housing with a flange formed with an opening adapted to receive a fastener for securing the housing to the vehicle. A crack initiator causes a crack to occur in the flange or the housing and thus reduces bending of the housing during a side impact collision causing lateral forces. Preferably, an attachment bolt extends through the opening into the vehicle and the flange forms a C-shape around the opening to allow lateral forces during the side impact collision to force the attachment bolt to slide out of the opening. Preferably, electronic components in the module include an event data recorder for recording data about the vehicle collision and relaying the data after the collision, a communications system for calling for assistance and a controller for cutting off the vehicle fuel supply.

A system and method for controlling deployment of an inflatable passenger restraint utilize distance-based thresholds to improve deployment time in high-speed crash events and to improve event discrimination for side impacts. The invention uses an acceleration signal to calculate distance and to calculate average acceleration using three buffers holding differing numbers of samples. The three average accelerations are used to determine the length of the acceleration curves above and below the zero axis which is defined as positive and negative jerk. Average acceleration and jerk are compared to the distance-based thresholds to determine whether or not to deploy the inflatable restraint.
