A removable, external peripheral holding device for a game-controller is disclosed. The device has left and right retaining annuli, each made to be a circumscribing, external fit to the respective left and right holding portions of a game controller, enabling the device to be removably attached to the game-controller. A receiving receptacle is connected to the retaining annuli by a cantilevered connecting element that extends forward of the game controller when the game controller is held in a playing orientation. This can accept a removable tab that is attached to a structural element. In one embodiment, the structural element is a lateral vision shield that may be foldable. In a second embodiment the structural element accommodates a smart phone.

Removable, external peripheral holder for a video game controller

A magnetically hinged, overrunning clutch is disclosed. Sprags containing rare-earth permanent magnets, and arranged in pairs of opposite magnetic orientation, are located within the gap between the inner surface of a hollow, circularly cylindrical shaft and the external surface of a smaller diameter, second circularly cylindrical shaft. Pairs of rare-earth permanent magnets encircling the second cylindrical shaft are located at, or just beneath, the surface of the shaft and are arranged in pairs having alternating magnetic orientation. The sprags are cylinders having a pseudo-spiral cross-section and are sized, and the ferromagnetic region located, such that when the sprags are attracted to the shaft-magnets, the first shaft may be rotated with respect to the second shaft in a first, overrunning direction of rotation, but the first shaft does not rotate with respect to the second shaft in an opposite, or lock-up direction.

A reciprocating action drive is disclosed in which a pair of magnetically sprung over-running clutches, each in overrunning connection with a driven shaft, and attached to a reciprocating lever, are joined via a direction reversing mechanism. In one embodiment, the direction reversing mechanism uses bevel gears, two of which are connected to the outer shells of the overrunning clutches. One or more intermediate bevel gears, mounted orthogonally to the axis of the driven shaft, mesh with the others to form the reversing mechanism. In a further embodiment, the reciprocating action drive is used to power a bicycle using a standard chain ring and chain arrangement and a cadence equalizing 3&#xd7; epicyclic gear train. In a still further embodiment, sprung limit stops limit the range of motion of the reciprocating levers to 60-degrees, and make stopping at the end of the tread less abrupt.

A method of automated content selection is disclosed, in which an end user views multimedia content provided via by a content aggregator that is also programmed to detect content delivery boundaries. This occurs, for instance, when the provider switches from showing an event to showing interstitial advertising. On detecting a delivery boundary, a substitute stream of multimedia content is then automatically sent. Detecting a content delivery boundary is accomplished in a twostep process. First, a candidate frame indicative of a deliver boundary is found. This is done, for instance, by finding a change in average sound volume of sufficient magnitude. The candidate frame is then compared to a database of representative frames of known interstitial video segments. If a sufficiently good match is found, the frame is determined to be a content boundary frame, and appropriate switching of the video being relayed is made.

Method of video content selection and display

A bistable electrowetting picture element that has both stable 'On' and 'Off' states in which no power is consumed, and a switching voltage threshold. Displays using such picture elements may be either passive or active matrix addressed. A picture element contains two immiscible, fluids within a space between two surfaces. One of the fluids is an electroconductive, polar liquid, such as to water. The other fluid is a non-polar liquid such as silicone oil. The picture element is electrically switchable between two states, both of which are maintained without a voltage being applied. In one state the light absorbing, non-polar liquid adjoins a region of one of the surfaces, while in the second state it adjoins another region on the other surface. The region adjoined to in the second state differs in area from the region adjoined to in the first state, thereby providing &#x201c;On&#x201d; and &#x201c;Off&#x201d; states.

The present invention is an autonomous response engine and method that can more successfully mimic a human conversational exchange. In an exemplary, preferred embodiment of the invention, the response engine has a statement-response database that is autonomously updated, thus enabling a database of significant size to be easily created and maintained with current information. The response engine autonomously generates natural language responses to natural language queries by following one of several conversation strategies, by choosing at least one context element from a context database and by searching the updated statement-response data base for appropriate matches to the queries.

This invention relates to a system and method for placing event related information into a video broadcasting so that the added information does not interfere with or obscure the primary action of interest in the broadcast. The disclosed information could be implemented by using instructions from an event information gathering system to trigger the display of one of an appropriate set of pre-rendered animations in the broadcast video via a well known live video insertion system ( ). The disclosed invention envisages the animation sequence having at least two parts (FIG. ), namely a core or base sequence ( ) which is always used, and a mid or a variable sequence ( ) which is changed according to the actual data that needs to be displayed. The live video insertion system data ( ) and processing may be used to perform occlusion, and/or tracking to either make the event information display look as if it is part of the scene, or merely to occlude the display when event action would otherwise be obscured, or to turn off or reposition, or resize the display when event action otherwise be obscured.

Event linked insertion of indicia into video

A method of anonymous targeted insertion of indicia into video broadcasts. Individual televisions or other video reception devices are associated with set-top boxes that monitor the usage and viewing habits of the television set or other video reception device. A viewer profile derived from data acquired from said monitoring is created wherein the viewer profile indicates certain characteristics about the viewer. This profile is transmitted to a centralized database, said centralized database being an intermediate link between the origin of the video broadcast and the end viewer. The purpose of the database is to link specific insertable indicia with matching specific viewer profiles. The insertable indicia are encoded directly into the broadcast video and re-broadcast to the end viewer where the set-top box decodes the broadcast video and performs insertion of the indicia. Thus, the system and method allow advertisers to target specific ads or indicia to specific viewing profiles.

A system and method (,) of altering the audio portion of a live television broadcast signal substantially in real time. The system is used to enhance the effects of live video insertion systems. The broadcast signal is received and separated into a pattern recognition unit (,) in order to recognize predetermined events. The broadcast audio is then altered based on the occurrence of said events. Alterations (,) include modifications to attributes such as volume, tone, pitch, synchronization, echo, reverberation, and frequency profile. Once altered, the audio is re-synchronized (,) with the video channel which has undergone its own modification.

Image insertion in video streams using a combination of physical sensors

A method for tracking motion from field to field in a sequence of related video broadcast images. The method uses template correlation to follow a set of predetermined landmarks within a scene in order to provide position information of objects in the current image. The current image object position information is compared to position information of the same objects within a reference array data table. The comparison is accomplished through the use of warp equations that map points in the current image to points in the reference array. Motion is tracked according to a velocity prediction scheme utilizing a weighted formula that emphasizes the weight of landmarks that are closer to their predicted position.

Method of tracking scene motion for live video insertion systems

A system for inserting images into live video fields includes a method for rapidly and efficiently identifying landmarks and objects. Initially a first template, having a first pattern similar to one of the distinctive features of the object, is passed over the video field and compared to it in order to preliminarily identify at least one possible distinctive feature as a candidate. A second template is then created by taking one of the major elements of the distinctive feature candidate and extending that element all the way across the second template and then comparing it to the distinctive feature candidate. This eliminates one or more possible falsely identified features. A third template is then created having a pattern formed from another major element of said distinctive feature and extending it all the way across the third template. The third template is then likewise passed over the distinctive feature candidate and compared therewith in order to eliminate still further falsely identified features. The method is continued until all possible false alarm candidates have been eliminated. The process is then repeated in order to preliminarily identify two or three landmarks of the target object. The locations of those objects are then compared to a geometric model to further verify if the object has been correctly identified. The methodology can be tested against a video taped program to determine if it accurately identifies objects.

Pattern recognition system employing unlike templates to detect objects

A system and method are disclosed for authorizing, controlling, and monitoring the insertion of advertising indicia and other video images into a broadcast video stream by an Electronic Billboard system operated at a location remote from a video program origination location. The disclosed control means will be implemented in the form of a user key which is presupplied to an operator of the remote Electronic Billboard system, a broadcast key supplied to that operator at or near the time of transmission of the broadcast video stream, and a verification means operated in conjunction with the remote Electronic Billboard system to verify that those keys correspond to a predetermined criteria. Upon such verification, the remote Electronic Billboard system is enabled to operate on the broadcast video stream. The control means may also be applied for maintaining the integrity of either or both the products being advertised and the event being broadcast.

System and method for downstream application and control electronic

An apparatus and method of altering video images to enable the addition of images, message, slogans or indicia in such a manner that they appear to be part of the original image as displayed. The application of the apparatus and method is particularly adapted to be used as advertising during sporting events or other events whereby an operator selects a portion of the video image display (16) such as a portion of a tennis court (12), recognizes the selected portion (17) and inserts a logo or advertising message (27) into that selected portion. The message is inserted into the selected portion of the court independent of how the scene is being panned or viewed by the television camera. The apparatus employs a pattern recognition algorithm such as the Burt Pyramid Algorithm to recognize the specific selected image portion and by means of the image processor (17, 20, 27) substitute the logo into the first image (16) to provide a display which appears as if the inserted image was actually painted on or otherwise permanently positioned on the court. Thus the inserted images are seamlessly and realistically incorporated into the original even as the original scene is moved, panned, magnified, zoomed or otherwise altered in size or perspective. The resulting composite image appears to the television viewer to be absolutely real and present at the scene.
