A transition metal composition is obtained by reacting the magnesium salt of a cycloalkyl carboxylic acid with a transition metal compound, and optionally a Lewis Base compound. The product may be used to produce an olefin polymerization catalyst by addition of for example an aluminium trialkyl and the resulting catalyst has a high activity and stereospecificity in an olefin polymerization process.

Hydrocarbon hydroconversion, especially hydrocarbon reforming, using catalysts whose supports have been prepared by a sol-gel process. For hydrocarbon reforming, it is preferred that the primary particles used to prepare the porous gel should have been prepared by a vapor phase condensation method, for example flame hydrolysis and that the support should have a narrow pore size distribution. The process produces much less gas by hydrocracking at given aromatics yields than comparative processes using conventional catalysts.

Isomerization of alkylbenzene hydrocarbons, for example xylenes, using a silica/alumina catalyst whose alumina content has been reduced by at least 1% of the original alumina content, from an original alumina content in the range 2 to 40% by weight to a content of at least 1% by weight.
