A process for liquefying natural gas in conjunction with processing natural gas to recover natural gas liquids (NGL) is disclosed. In the process, the natural gas stream to be liquefied is taken from one of the streams in the NGL recovery plant and cooled under pressure to condense it. A distillation stream is withdrawn from the NGL recovery plant to provide some of the cooling required to condense the natural gas stream. The condensed natural gas stream is expanded to an intermediate pressure and supplied to a mid-column feed point on a distillation column. The bottom product from this distillation column preferentially contains the majority of any hydrocarbons heavier than methane that would otherwise reduce the purity of the liquefied natural gas, and is routed to the NGL recovery plant so that these heavier hydrocarbons can be recovered in the NGL product. The overhead vapor from the distillation column is cooled and condensed, and a portion of the condensed stream is supplied to a top feed point on the distillation column to serve as reflux. A second portion of the condensed stream is expanded to low pressure to form the liquefied natural gas stream.

LNG production in cryogenic natural gas processing plants

A process for the recovery of ethane, ethylene, propane, propylene and heavier hydrocarbon components from a hydrocarbon gas stream is disclosed. In recent years, the preferred method of separating a hydrocarbon gas stream generally includes supplying at least portions of the gas stream to a fractionation tower having at least one reboiler, and often one or more side reboilers, to supply heat to the column by withdrawing and heating some of the tower liquids to produce stripping vapors that separate the more volatile components from the desired components. The reboiler and side reboilers (if any) are typically integrated into the feed stream cooling scheme to provide at least a portion of the refrigeration needed to condense the desired components for subsequent fractionation in the distillation column. In the process disclosed, the tower reboiling scheme is modified to use one or more tower liquid distillation streams from a point higher in the column than is used in the conventional reboiling scheme, providing colder stream(s) for the reboiler(s) that allow more effective cooling of the feed streams and thereby improve the efficiency with which the desired components are recovered. In addition, the tower liquid streams withdrawn from a higher point in the column contain larger quantities of the more volatile components, which when vaporized provide better stripping of undesirable components like carbon dioxide without reducing the recovery of the desired components. The heated distillation stream is returned to a lower point on the fractionation tower that is separated from the withdrawal point by at least one theoretical stage.

Hydrocarbon gas processing

A process for the recovery of propane, propylene and heavier hydrocarbon components from a hydrocarbon gas stream is disclosed. The stream is cooled and/or expanded to partially condense it, then separated to provide a first vapor stream. The first vapor stream is directed into a contacting device whereby a third vapor stream and a C.sub.3 -containing liquid stream are formed. The C.sub.3 -containing liquid stream is directed to a distillation column wherein a second vapor stream is separated to recover a product containing the major portion of the C.sub.3 components and heavier hydrocarbon components. The second vapor stream is directed into heat exchange relation with the third vapor stream to cool the second vapor stream and condense at least a part of it, forming a condensed stream. At least a portion of the condensed stream is directed to the contacting device to intimately contact the first vapor stream; the remaining portion of the condensed stream is supplied to the distillation column as its top feed. The quantities and temperatures of the feeds to the contacting device and the distillation column are effective to maintain the overhead temperatures of the contacting device and the distillation column at temperatures whereby the major portion of the desired components is recovered.

A process for the recovery of ethane, ethylene, propane, propylene and heavier hydrocarbon components from a hydrocarbon gas stream is disclosed. The stream is divided into first and second streams. The first stream is cooled to condense substantially all of it and is thereafter expanded to the fractionation tower pressure and supplied to the fractionation tower at a first mid-column feed position. The second stream is expanded to the tower pressure and is then supplied to the column at a second mid-column feed position. A recycle stream is withdrawn from the tower overhead after it has been warmed and compressed. The compressed recycle stream is cooled sufficiently to substantially condense it, and is then expanded to the pressure of the distillation column and supplied to the column at a top column feed position. The pressure of the compressed recycle stream and the quantities and temperatures of the feeds to the column are effective to maintain the column overhead temperature at a temperature whereby the major portion of the desired components is recovered.

A process for the recovery of ethane, ethylene, propane, propylene and heavier hydrocarbon components from a hydrocarbon gas stream is disclosed. The stream is cooled to partially condense it, then separated to provide a first vapor stream and a first condensed stream. The first vapor stream is divided into first and second streams, then the first stream is combined with the first condensed stream. The combined stream is cooled and expanded to an intermediate pressure to partially condense it, then separated to provide a second vapor stream and a second condensed stream. The second vapor stream is cooled at the intermediate pressure to condense substantially all of it and is thereafter expanded to the fractionation tower pressure and supplied to the fractionation tower at a top feed position. The second condensed stream is subcooled at the intermediate pressure, expanded to the tower pressure, and is supplied to the column at a first mid-column feed position. The second stream is expanded to the tower pressure and is then supplied to the column at a second mid-column feed position. The quantities and temperatures of the feeds to the column are effective to maintain the column overhead temperature at a temperature whereby the major portion of the desired components is recovered. In an alternative embodiment, the combined stream is cooled at essentially inlet pressure to partially condense it, then separated at pressure to provide the second vapor stream and the second condensed stream.

A process for the recovery of C.sub.2 components (ethylene and/or ethane) and heavier hydrocarbon components from a gas stream containing a significant quantity of components more volatile than methane (e.g., hydrogen, nitrogen, and/or others) is disclosed. The cooled, partially condensed hydrocarbon bearing gas stream is separated into a vapor containing substantial quantities of the component(s) more volatile than methane and a liquid containing predominantly hydrocarbons. The vapor is expanded to the distillation column pressure and then supplied to the column at an upper mid-column feed position. The liquid is expanded to column pressure and supplied to the column at a lower mid-column feed position. A recycle stream is withdrawn from the column at a point below the upper mid-column feed position where the bulk of the volatile components are supplied to the column. The recycle stream is compressed and cooled so that a substantial portion is condensed and then supplied to the column as reflux at the top column feed position. The major portion of this reflux is liquid methane which allows the recovery of a significant portion of the C.sub.2 and heavier components that are in the vapors in the upper section of the distillation column. The distillation column overhead vapor contains predominantly methane and the more volatile components The major portion of the desired components is recovered in the distillation column bottom liquid product.

Gas processing

A process for the recovery of ethane, ethylene, propane, propylene and heavier hydrocarbon components from a hydrocarbon gas stream is disclosed. The stream is divided into first and second streams. The first stream is cooled to condense substantially all of it and is thereafter expanded to the fractionation tower pressure. After expansion, the cooled first stream is directed in heat exchange relation with a compressed recycle portion of the fractionation tower overhead. The warmed first stream is then supplied to the fractionation tower at a first mid-column feed position. The second stream is expanded to the tower pressure and is then supplied to the column at a second mid-column feed position. The recycle stream is cooled by the first stream sufficiently to substantially condense it. The substantially condensed recycle stream is then expanded to the pressure of the distillation column and supplied to the column at a top column feed position. The pressure of the recycle stream and the quantities and temperatures of the feeds to the column are effective to maintain the column overhead temperature at a temperature whereby the major portion of the desired components is recovered.

A process for the recovery of ethane and heavier hydrocarbon components from a hydrocarbon gas stream is disclosed. The stream is divided into first and second streams. The first stream is cooled to condense substantially all of it and is thereafter expanded to a pressure below that of the distillation column. After expansion, the cooled first stream is directed in heat exchange relation with a warmer distillation stream rising from fractionation stages of the distillation column. The warmed first stream is then separated to provide a cold vapor and a liquid stream. The liquid is supplied to the column at a first mid-column feed position and the cold vapor is supplied to the column at a second mid-column feed position. The second stream is expanded to the column pressure and is then supplied to the column at a third mid-column feed position. The distillation stream is cooled by the first stream sufficiently to partially condense it . The partially condensed distillation stream is then separated to provide volatile residue gas and a reflux stream feed. The reflux stream feed is supplied to the column at a top column feed position. In instances where the second stream is expanded in a work expansion machine, any condensation formed prior to work expansion is combined either in whole or in part with the first stream prior to cooling and/or expansion, or supplied either in whole or in part to the column as a condensed stream at a fourth mid-column feed position, or some combination thereof. The temperatures of the feeds to the column are effective to maintain the column overhead temperature at a temperature whereby the major portion of the C.sub.2 + components is recovered.

A process for the recovery of propane and heavier hydrocarbon components from a hydrocarbon gas stream is disclosed. The stream is divided into first and second streams. The first stream is cooled to condense substantially all of it and is thereafter expanded to the pressure of the distillation column. After expansion, the cooled first stream is directed in heat exchange relation with a warmer distillation stream rising from fractionation stages of the distillation column. The warmed first stream is then supplied to the column at a first mid-column feed position. The second stream is expanded to the column pressure and is then supplied to the column at a second mid-column feed position. The distillation stream is cooled by the first stream sufficiently to partially condense it. The partially condensed distillation stream is then separated to provide volatile residue gas and a reflux stream. The reflux stream is supplied to the column at a top column feed position. The temperatures of the feeds to the column are effective to maintain the column overhead temperature at a temperature whereby the major portion of the C.sub.3 + components is recovered. Alternatively, control means may be adapted so that the major portion of the C.sub.2 + components is recovered.

The processing of gas streams containing hydrocarbons and other gases of similar volatility to recover components such as ethane, propane and heavier hydrocarbons from a residue gas containing methane is disclosed. In prior art processes, it has been customary to cool incoming raw feed gas and to separate the desired products by distillation. A part of the needed cooling is obtained by expanding the raw feed gas from a high feed pressure to a lower pressure at which distillation occurs. In the present invention, the raw feed gas is divided into two gaseous streams before expansion. The first stream is expanded in the usual fashion and supplied to the demethanizer as a mid-column feed. The remaining part is cooled to substantial condensation. The condensed stream is expanded and supplied to the demethanizer column above the feed point of the first stream. The split vapor feed provides unexpected advantages in reducing the risk of carbon dioxide icing in the demethanizer column, thus either eliminating or reducing the need for prior CO.sub.2 removal. Alternately, without increasing the risk of carbon dioxide icing, ethane recovery can be increased.

The processing of gas streams containing hydrocarbons and other gases of similar volatility to recover high yields of components such as ethane, propane, and heavier hydrocarbons therefrom by cooling said gas stream under pressure to form a liquid portion, and expanding the liquid portion to a pressure lower than feed pressure whereby a part of the liquid portion vaporizes to cool the remaining part of the liquid portion is improved by pre-cooling the liquid portion prior to flash expansion. In one embodiment this is accomplished by dividing the remaining part of the liquid portion into a first and second stream, directing the first liquid stream into heat exchange relation with the liquid portion of the feed stream prior to expansion to warm the first liquid stream and pre-cool the liquid portion prior to expansion. Both first and second liquid streams are then supplied to a fractionating column, the second stream being supplied to the fractionating column at a point thereon higher than the first stream. Several other methods of pre-cooling the liquid portion are also described.

A process for separating hydrocarbon gases is described for the recovery of gases such as ethane and heavier hydrocarbons from natural gas streams or similar refinery or process streams. In the process described, the gas to be separated is cooled at a high pressure to produce partial condensation. The liquid from the partial condensation is further cooled and then expanded to a lower pressure. At the lower pressure, the liquid is then separated into fractions in a distillation column. The basic separation process is improved by combining the condensed high-pressure liquid with a stream having a lower bubble point, with cooling of one or both streams prior to expansion.

A process for separating hydrocarbon gases is described for the recovery of gases such as ethane and heavier hydrocarbons from natural gas streams or similar refinery or process streams. In the process described, the gas to be separated is cooled at a high pressure to produce partial condensation, and the vapor and liquid portions are separated. Liquid from the partial condensation is further cooled and then expanded to a lower pressure. At the lower pressure, the liquid is supplied to a distillation column, wherein it is separated into fractions. The vapor portion is work-expanded to the operating pressure of the distillation column and supplied to the distillation column below the feed point of the expanded liquid portion. The operating efficiency of the process is improved by turning back at least part of thevapor portion and warming it by heat exchange against incoming feed before it is work-expanded. By thus warming the vapor, more work and refrigeration can be recovered in the work expansion machine.

The processing of gas streams containing hydrocarbons and other gases of similar volatility to recover high yields of components such as ethane, propane, and heavier hydrocarbons therefrom by expanding said gas stream in at least two stages through turboexpanders, each stage cooling the gas stream and producing energy in the form of horsepower used to drive a recompressor unit or other mechanical apparatus. Condensed liquids are collected intermediate the expansion stages. Preferably, a supplemental gas cooling stage and condensed liquid recovery occurs following each expansion stage.
