An apparatus for pre-processing logs to separate outer jacket fibers, comprising a plurality of spaced apart rollers through which a log can pass, each roller having at least one outwardly extending concentric projection, the projection being suitable to separate fibers. A pressure mechanism determines the diameter of the log so that the rollers can provide the appropriate amount of pressure to and engagement of the projections with the log. A feeding mechanism moves the log along a flow path past the rollers.

Apparatus and method for separating fibers in wood logs

A method for densifying a fibrous mat, such as scrim, to achieve a uniform mat density, including a set of parallel bars each having a row of pins extending downward therefrom which can engage the mat fibers, a plurality of shafts along which the bars slide so as to maintain the bars parallel, a plurality of extendable accordion linkages connecting the set of bars, and a linear positioning assembly having a reciprocating drive mechanism coupled to one of the bars which can move the bars in response to an actuation signal. As the drive mechanism retracts the bar to which it is coupled the spacing between the rows of bars is decreased uniformly and the rows of pins draw the fibers together and compress them uniformly across the width of the mat.

Apparatus and method for densifying a fibrous mat

A method for forming an engineered wood product from pulpwood, comprising providing a quantity of pulpwood; crushing and scrimming the pulpwood to form a mat; drying in a first drying step the mat in a first pass dryer; applying a resin to the mat; and, drying in a second drying step the mat in a second pass dryer. The drying process controls moisture content using the rate of change between the entering and exiting airflow temperature. The resulting product has a high modulus of elasticity and modulus of rupture.

Method for drying wood product and product obtained thereby

Low-density press board material is prepared by particulate kenaf core raw material and a cold-set, thermosetting or thermoplastic binder. The compressed and cured material exhibits dimensional stability, acoustical and thermal insulative properties and related characteristics roughly equivalent to some currently available wood and wood-substitute materials. The surfaces of the kenaf core board can be upgraded with the addition of overlays.
