Cerenkov Emission (CE) during external beam radiation therapy (EBRT) from a linear accelerator (Linac) has been demonstrated as a useful tool for radiotherapy quality assurance and potentially other applications for online tracking of tumors during treatment. However, an overlooked area is the molecular probing of the cancer status during delivery mainly due to the limited detection sensitivity of CE and lack of flexible tools to fit into an already complex treatment delivery environment. Silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) can be used for low light detection due to their extreme sensitivity that mirrors photomultiplier tubes and yet has a form factor that is similar to silicon photodiodes, allowing for improved flexibility in device design. This work assesses the feasibility of using SiPMs to detect CE, interrogate the tumor molecular status during EBRT, and contrast its performance with silicon photodiodes (PDs) available commercially.

An optoelectronic neutron detector and method for detecting nuclear material having a neutron capture and scatter medium receiving neutrons and producing secondary charged particles, a photodetector detecting emitted light from the secondary charged particles and outputting a detector signal, and a controller receiving the detector signal and providing an alert or quantitative indication of detected nuclear material in response to the detector signal.

Optoelectronic neutron detector

A multilayer stack including a substrate, an active layer, and a tetradymite buffer layer positioned between the substrate and the active layer is disclosed. A method for fabricating a multilayer stack including a substrate, a tetradymite buffer layer and an active layer is also disclosed. Use of such stacks may be in photovoltaics, solar cells, light emitting diodes, and night vision arrays, among other applications.

Tetradymite layer assisted heteroepitaxial growth and applications

The invention is an optical method and apparatus for measuring the temperature of semiconductor substrates in real-time, during thin film growth and wafer processing. Utilizing the nearly linear dependence of the interband optical absorption edge on temperature, the present method and apparatus result in highly accurate measurement of the absorption edge in diffuse reflectance and transmission geometry, in real time, with sufficient accuracy and sensitivity to enable closed loop temperature control of wafers during film growth and processing. The apparatus operates across a wide range of temperatures covering all of the required range for common semiconductor substrates.

Apparatus and method for real time measurement of substrate temperatures for use in semiconductor growth and wafer processing

The present invention relates to biological sensors. In particular, the present invention relates to the use of remotely driven nonlinear rotation of particles (e.g., magnetic particles) for detection of cells such as microorganisms (e.g., bacteria and viruses). The present invention further relates to the use of remotely driven nonlinear rotation of particles for measurement of physical properties of a solution (e.g., viscosity).

Non-linear rotation rates of remotely driven particles and uses thereof

Described herein are various methods, devices and systems for performing asynchronous magnetic bead rotation (AMBR) to detect and monitor cellular growth and/or behavior. Cluster rotation of magnetic particles for AMBR is descried. In particular, described herein are systems for the parallel analysis of multiple wells of a sample plate. Also described herein are methods for controlling the illumination and imaging of rotating magnetic particles.

Asynchronous magnetic bead rotation sensing systems and methods

A method of measuring at least one property including a magnetic property of target material is provided. A pump pulse train having one or more pump pulses is generated. The target material is irradiated with at least a portion of the one or more pump pulses so as to cause transient perturbation in the target material. At least one probe pulse train is generated having one or more probe pulses. The target material is irradiated with at least a portion of the one or more probe pulses to obtain one or more reflected probe pulses which are modulated based on the transient perturbation. A time interval between a time at which the target material is irradiated by each of the pump pulses and a time at which the target material is irradiated by each of its corresponding probe pulses is controlled. Each modulated probe pulse is detected.

Method and system for measuring at least one property including a magnetic property of a material using pulsed laser sources

A detector having a thin film of boron nitride (BN) such as cubic BN, and method, system and array utilizing same are provided. Solid-state p-i-n, deep depletion p-n and Schottky diode detector devices based on a thin film of semiconducting cubic BN are provided. Miniaturized solid-state detectors based on cubic boron nitride have a broad range of applications, both civilian and military.

Apparatus for quantitatively measuring the curvature and/or relative tilt of large surfaces wherein a small array of parallel laser beams, each separated by a known distance, reflect from the surface of a sample and fall upon a feedback controlled front-surface steering mirror to a detector that measures both the change in separation of the reflected beams and the spatial translation of the entire array on the detector. The sample surface is translated beneath or in front of the fixed laser array by means of a computer controlled stage or other apparatus to create a 1-dimensional line scan or 2-dimensional map of both bow and relative tilt of the sample surface. A computer-driven, feedback-controlled steering mirror compensates for varying sample tilt by precisely realigning the reflected laser array onto the detector as the sample is translated. The apparatus also utilizes a laser with intensity feedback control to continuously optimize the reflected laser power for varying surface reflectivity as the sample is translated. This combination provides a means to quantitatively measure curvature and relative tilt of sample areas much larger than the actual laser beam array size.

A magnetic tunneling structure formed of first and second ferromagnetic layers and a insulating tunneling barrier layer sandwiched therebetween. The first and second ferromagnetic layers are preferably formed of the same ferromagnetic material, but have different crystallographic structures. The insulating tunneling barrier layer is preferably a nitride layer, for example, boron nitride, formed on the first ferromagnetic layer.

A quasi-periodic sequence of a plurality of types of layers is produced by selecting successive subsequences of the layers in response to at least one prior subsequence of the layers and a predetermined substitution matrix. In one specific illustrative embodiment, the substitution matrix is such that each successive term of a series corresponds to a Fibonacci sequence. Quasi-periodic structures produced in accordance with the present invention are produced simply and inexpensively without the need for very stringent manufacturing tolerances and controls. Optical embodiments of the invention yield highly desirable characteristics with respect to incident radiation in the ranges of X-rays, ultaviolet, and visible light. Additionally, electrical devices having unusual electrical characteristics can be produced.
