A communications infrastructure connector system comprises a pair of engageable hermaphroditic connector units. Each unit can house a plurality of connectors which mate with corresponding connectors of the other unit. Each unit has a handle comprising a pair of eccentrically mounted pivot arms. On movement of the handles of the two connector units towards one another, an arcuate portion each handle comes into contact with the same portion of the other handle. The eccentric mounting causes the two connector units to be forced apart.

Two rows of insulation displacement contacts are received in a connector housing. The contacts each comprise an insulation displacement end, a medial portion and a tail end. The medial portions are arranged across the housing body in grooves and the tail portions of the two rows extend from the housing in a common plane. Two non-proximate contacts of each row are connected at their medial portions by a capacitative coupling member which may comprise a chip capacitor or a pair of conducting plates connected by a bridge portion.

An optical fiber connection unit has an aperture for mounting to a standard electrical box so that the unit can replace an electrical outlet (power or tele-communications). The unit has a peripheral wall having flanges for easy retention of optical fibers within the unit prior to affixing a cover plate. The cover plate and peripheral wall have discontinuities for passage of optical fibers at the bottom of the unit to connect to optical modules therein. The cover plate has an aperture to allow a standard electrical module to be mounted thereto for provision of both optical and electrical connection.

A telecommunications connector with break/test facility includes a housing (10) which receives a plurality of pairs of contacts (42,44). The housing has a series of first chambers (40) and a series of adjacent second chambers (56). The first contact of each pair has and insulation displacement portion (102,104) received in the first chamber and a spring tail (114) which is received an anchored in the second chamber. The second contact has a conductor termination portion (80) which may be an insulation displacement contact also arranged in the first chamber beneath the first contact, and a spring contact portion (94) arranged in the second chamber to form a spring contact switch with the spring tail of the first contact. A tester (100) may be inserted into the spring contact switch to test the circuits.

A communications connector sub-assembly comprises a body (10) defining a plurality of parallel grooves (37) each receiving a jack contact (30). The body includes one or more insulation displacement connectors (14, 16) which have insulation displacement contacts (12) anchored therein. The insulation displacement contacts are connected to the jack contacts through a printed circuit board (24). The anchoring of the insulation displacement contacts in the body secures the PCB to the body to give a complete sub-assembly. Side walls (44) are provided to surround and protect free ends (36) of the jack contacts from mechanical damage.

Communications connectors

An electrical connection system, for example a dropside patch panel, comprises a mounting rail (12) which receives first connectors (14) arranged with their contacts facing away from the rail (12). Cable introduced between the rail and the connectors is separated into individual conductors which are terminated at contacts (34, 36) via slots (30) in the rail walls. A second connector (16) carries standard data or voice sockets communications (19) which are connected to the first connector via edge contact carrying PCBs (38) which engage in slots (40) in the first connectors. The PCB edge connectors have a discontinuity on one surface, and one half of the contact is connected to the contact on the other side of the PCB to provide a jumpered interconnection between upper (34) and lower (36) rows of contacts of the first connectors in a first position of the second connectors, and contact between the upper rows of contacts and the standard sockets (19) when the second connectors are moved further into the slots (40) to occupy a second position. The slots (40) are formed to receive the PCBs (38) from either end.
