The invention relates to a non-aqueous electrochemical cell having spirally wound electrodes and a separator having a basis weight of at least 20 g/m.sup.2 and comprising melt blown non-woven polypropylene fibers.

Electrochemical cell

This invention relates to a separator for non-aqueous electrochemical cells and in particular lithium/manganese dioxide cells. It has been discovered that a polypropylene microporous film having a thickness greater than one mil and voids greater than 50% by volume, has beneficial properties without the concomitant problems generally associated with separators having open structures.

Separator for electrochemical cells

A novel gelling agent comprised of cross-linked CMC (carboxymethyl cellulose) is utilized as a gelling agent in the anode of alkaline electrochemical cells with improved cell performance and reduced cell gassing as compared to the commonly utilized non cross-linked CMC.
