Disclosed is a liquid coating composition, useful for making a chip resistant coating, comprising a binder of: a first and a second urethane resin each containing terminal, reactive ethylenically unsaturated groups. Each urethane resin is prepared by reacting components comprising (A) an isocyanate-terminated prepolymer which is the product of reacting an organic polyisocyanate with an organic polyol with (B) an isocyanate reactive group-containing unsaturated monomer selected from hydroxyalkyl acrylates, hydroxyalkyl methacrylates and hydroxyalkyl acrylamides. The organic polyol for the first urethane resin has a hydroxyl functionality of 3 or more; the organic polyol for the second urethane resin has a hydroxyl functionality of less than three; and the average functionality of the polyols utilized for the first and second urethane resins is less than three. Also disclosed is a method of making a cured chip resistant, coating.

Chip resistant coatings and methods of application

A coating composition which exhibits excellent sag resistance without the necessity for externally added rheology control agent is prepared from a curing agent and an ungelled hydroxyl functional graft copolymer. The graft copolymer is prepared by the vinyl addition polymerization, in an inert organic solvent, of a vinyl monomer component containing at least a portion of a carboxyl functional vinyl monomer in the presence of a glycidyl ester containing acrylic polymer. The grafting occurs by the condensation reaction between the carboxyl groups of the vinyl monomer component and the epoxy groups of the glycidyl ester containing acrylic polymer.

Coating compositions prepared from hydroxyl functional graft copolymers

Disclosed is an adduct of a mercapto-functional monohydric alcohol and a vinyl-type silane having at least one hydrolyzable group directly attached to a silicon atom, the adduct prepared by reacting the mercapto-functional monohydric alcohol and the vinyl-type silane in the presence of a free radical initiator. Also disclosed is an NCO-functional compound comprising the reaction product of: (A) the aforesaid adduct of a mercapto-functional monohydric alcohol and a vinyl-type silane having at least one hydrolyzable group directly attached to a silicon atom, and (B) an organic polyisocyanate.

A liquid, hydroxyl functional graft copolymer is prepared by the vinyl addition polymerization, in an inert organic medium, of a vinyl monomer component comprising at least a portion of a carboxyl functional vinyl monomer in the presence of a glycidyl ester containing acrylic polymer, the grafting occuring by the condensation reaction between the carboxyl groups of the vinyl monomer component and the epoxy groups of the glycidyl ester containing acrylic polymer. The graft copolymer is especially useful in formulating clear coating compositions which exhibit excellent sag resistance without the necessity for externally added rheology control agent.

Hydroxyl functional graft copolymers

Disclosed is a free-radical addition product of a mercapto-functional polyhydric alcohol and a vinyl-type silane having at least one hydrolyzable group directly attached to a silicon atom, the addition product prepared by reacting the mercapto-functional polyhydric alcohol and the vinyl-type silane in the presence of a free radical initiator. The addition product contains at least two hydroxyl groups bonded to carbon atoms and at least one silicon atom bonded to at least one hydrolyzable group. The resulting polyhydroxyl-functional addition products can be chain extended using organic polyisocyanates to produce isocyanate-terminated compounds which also contain silicon atoms directly bonded to hydrolyzable groups along the molecule chains.

A crosslinkable composition comprising a polyepoxide and a polyacid which is the half-ester formed from reacting an acid anhydride with a polyol is disclosed. The compositions are useful as coatings, particularly as clear coats in color-plus-clear coatings.

Liquid crosslinkable compositions using polyepoxides and polyacids

A liquid, ungelled composition of matter composed of a graft copolymer prepared by the free radical initiated polymerization in an organic medium of a vinyl monomer component which contains at least 0.5 weight percent of an epoxy group containing vinyl monomer in the presence of an acid group containing polymer having an acid value greater than 10 mg KOH/g. One means of graft formation is the condensation reaction between the acid groups of the acid group containing polymer and the epoxy groups of the vinyl monomer component.

A color-plus-clear coating system is disclosed. A pigmented or colored base coat is first applied to a substrate followed by the application of a transparent top coat to the base coat. The transparent top coat composition is a liquid crosslinkable composition comprising a polyepoxide and a polyacid curing agent. The polyepoxide-polyacid curing agent in the transparent top coat provides a composite coating with outstanding gloss and distinctness of image making the composite coating particularly useful as an automotive top coat.
