Systems and methods for attaching a cover to a text body to create bound documents with floating and attached spines are described. In some embodiments, a solid pressure sensitive adhesive film is applied between a cover and the side hinge areas of a text body, and a cover is bound to the side hinge areas of the text body with pressure. A solid pressure sensitive adhesive tape may be dispensed from an adhesive dispenser that includes a plug-in cartridge housing, a supply spool, and a take-up spool. In other embodiments, an adhesive sheet that includes a hot melt adhesive film and a backing is applied to the text body, with the hot melt adhesive film in contact with the side hinge areas and the spine of the text body. The hot melt adhesive is exposed in areas corresponding to the side hinge areas of the text body for attaching the cover to the text body. In one embodiment, an adhesive sheet includes a hot melt adhesive film and a backing layer that is attached to the hot melt adhesive film and has one or more slits extending in a substantially longitudinal direction. The slitted backing layer is configured to expose the hot melt adhesive upon stretching of the backing layer in a direction substantially orthogonal to the longitudinal direction.

Systems and methods of attaching a cover to a text body

An adhesive application assembly is configured for use in a book binding station that includes a saddle for supporting a plurality of sheets. The adhesive application assembly includes an adhesive applicator, a movable support arm supporting the adhesive applicator, and a drive mechanism. The drive mechanism is coupled with the support arm and is configured to move the support arm and the adhesive applicator toward the saddle to apply adhesive to an outermost sheet on the saddle.

Method and assembly for binding a book with adhesive

A system including a data acquisition system and a processing system is provided. The data acquisition system is configured to capture a first reference frame that includes a first feature in a first imaging area on a substrate prior to a relative position between the data acquisition system and the substrate being adjusted by approximately a predetermined distance during a first time period, capture a first comparison frame that includes the first feature in a second imaging area on the substrate and a second reference frame that includes a second feature in the first imaging area on the substrate subsequent to the first time period, and capture a second comparison frame that includes the second feature in the second imaging area on the substrate subsequent to the relative position being adjusted by approximately the predetermined distance during a second time period that is subsequent to the first time period. The second imaging area is separated from the first imaging area by the predetermined distance. The processing system is configured to determine a displacement sum using a first displacement between the first feature in the first reference frame and the first feature in the first comparison frame and a second displacement between the second feature in the second reference frame and the second feature in the second comparison frame.

A staple hole forming apparatus including a pair of pins and a pin receptor. The pair of pins are spaced from each other a distance substantially equal to a distance between two legs of a staple. The pin receptor is positioned opposite the pair of pins relative to a sheet path through the staple hole forming apparatus. The pin receptor is positioned to mate with at least one of the pair of pins. One of the pair of pins and the pin receptor is configured to move towards and mate with the other of the pair of pins and the pin receptor causing the pair of pins to penetrate a sheet extending between the pair of pins and the pin receptor to form two holes in the sheet. Each of the two holes is configured to receive one of the two legs of the staple.

Staple hole forming apparatus

A book finishing station configured to process a media sheet includes a support apparatus, a clamping apparatus, and a heating element. The clamping apparatus is spaced from the support apparatus. During use, a media sheet is positioned between the support apparatus and the clamping apparatus, and the clamping apparatus is configured to move toward the support apparatus to clamp the media sheet between the support apparatus and the clamping apparatus. The heating element is coupled with one of the support apparatus and the clamping apparatus and is configured to apply heat to the media sheet near a fold line defined by the media sheet.

A scanning system includes a scanner accessory which is operationally supported by a wider-purpose wireless handheld communications device. The communications device may be a personal digital assistant (PDA), a cellular phone, a combined PDA/cellular phone, or a similar device that enables wireless communications. The scanner accessory is adapted for freehand scanning and includes an image sensor, at least one navigator, and data transfer circuitry that is compatible with exchanging information with the communications device, including outgoing captured image information and incoming scan control information for controlling scanning operations by the scan accessory. Simultaneous with capturing image information by the image sensor, the navigator tracks the position of the image sensor relative to a document being scanned, so that the image information can be 'position-tagged' to form an electronic image for display at the communications device. Alternatively, the scanning capability can be integrated into the wireless handheld communications device.

Method and apparatus for assembling sheets of printing media for booklets. In one aspect the sheets are folded, sheet-by-sheet, and in another aspect the sheets are collected, sheet-by-sheet, and registered on a fold in each sheet. In still another aspect printed sheets are loaded, sheet-by-sheet, into the apparatus. Each sheet is trimmed to a pre-determined width depending on the position of the sheet in the booklet being assembled. The sheets are thereafter folded, sheet-by-sheet, and collected into a stack. The method and apparatus have particular application in finishing duplex printed sheets of paper into saddle-stitched booklets.

Method and apparatus for making booklets

Systems and methods for binding a text body are described. A multi-function sheet binder is configured to heat a preformed solid hot melt adhesive to a melting temperature, form the melted adhesive by pressing the melted adhesive into a spine of a text body and folding down edges of the melted adhesive into contact with the text body, and actively cool the formed adhesive. A spot heater is configured to heat one or more localized areas of a solid hot melt adhesive to a temperature sufficient to tack the hot melt adhesive to a text body spine. An adhesive former is configured to press a localized region of a preformed heated solid hot melt adhesive into a spine of a text body and to fold down edge regions of the preformed solid hot melt adhesive into contact with the text body.

Systems and methods of binding a text body

The system and method for binding documents as described creates documents having features such as tabs, finger indexes, tear-out cards, and windows. These features are desirable for both their appearance and functionality and are easily added to a document during sheet-by-sheet processing. A sheet-wise binding system includes a sheet transport path for transporting a plurality of printed sheets in a sheet-wise manner and a punch configured to punch a feature into at least one of the sheets traveling through the sheet transport path. A stacking system is provided for stacking the punched and unpunched sheets and a binding system for binding the stacked sheets is used to form a finished document. A controller is programed to control the sheet transport path and the punch to create the features in selected sheets and at selected locations in the sheets according to a punch schedule.

A probabilistic input-output system is used to classify media in printer applications. The probabilistic input-output system uses at least two input parameters to generate an output that has a joint dependency on the input parameters. The input parameters are associated with image-related measurements acquired from imaging textural features that are characteristic of the different classes (types and/or groups) of possible media. The output is a best match in a correlation between stored reference information and information that is specific to an unknown medium of interest. Cluster-weighted modeling techniques are used for generating highly accurate classification results. Within the imaging process, grazing angle illumination (i.e., introducing light at an angle of at least 45 degrees to the normal of the surface being imaged) provides sufficient contrasts for distinguishing the structural features (e.g., paper fibers) of the unknown medium, but non-grazing illumination may be used when specular measurements are to be obtained.

The present invention is a method and device for identifying recording media in a printer. The invention utilizes fine structure of the media revealed by illumination from one or more directions to distinguish among different kinds of plain papers, coated papers, such as glossy papers, and transparency films. Multiple light sources at different incidence and/or orientation angles apply light on the test surface, and scattered light is converted into signals and then analyzed. Various metric and analysis techniques can be applied to the signals to determine the media type.
