A rotor blade for a gas turbine, includes a blade extending in a radial direction, with a blade body having a peripheral wall with pressure-side and suction-side wall sections, a plate-shaped crown base connected to the peripheral wall in the region of the blade tip, and a sweep edge extending along the peripheral wall, the peripheral wall and the crown base defining a cavity in the blade body, the sweep edge being aligned on the outer side with the peripheral wall and protruding radially over the crown base, and cooling channels are embodied in the blade body, extending from the cavity to cooling fluid outlets provided in the sweep edge. At least one recess being formed in the front surface of the sweep edge, into which at least some of the cooling channels flow such that the cooling fluid outlets are entirely arranged in a bottom region of the recess.

An axial assembled interlocking labyrinth seal with a rotor and a stator each having a series of separate spiral shaped teeth with a gap formed on each of the separate teeth, so that the rotor can be rotated within the stator and axially advanced by aligning the gaps of the teeth on the rotor with gaps on the stator so that the axial labyrinth seal can be assembled.

An aero gas turbine engine with a fan stage and a bearing rotatably supporting the fan stage, where the bearing is cooled by passing cooling air through the bearing, and the spent bearing cooling air is re-injected into the air flow path at a location where the effect is minimalized. The location is just downstream from a leading edge of a stator vane and along a pressure side surface of the vane. A fine mist of oil can be discharged into the bearing cooling air to also lubricate the bearing, where both the oil and the spent cooling air is reintroduced into the air flow path.

A gas turbine engine having a rotor centering cooling system for cooling struts within an exhaust diffuser and turbine case to reduce tip rub during hot restarts is disclosed. In particular, the rotor centering cooling system may be positioned within struts in the exhaust diffuser downstream from a turbine assembly for limiting thermal gradients between top and bottom struts to prevent the exhaust bearing body from becoming off-center during steady state operation as a result of the top struts becoming hotter than the bottom struts. The rotor centering cooling system may reduce the temperature at the exhaust diffuser and turbine case, thereby reducing the thermal gradient between the top and bottom struts and top and bottom of the turbine case. As such, the exhaust bearing body remains centered, thereby preventing a tighter blade tip clearance at the top of the turbine assembly than at the bottom of the assembly.

A spiral cooling system for cooling an aft turbine casing of a gas turbine engine. The gas turbine engine includes a turbine casing having a fore end and an aft end, a star bearing support member supporting a bearing housing and including a plurality of struts each mounted to an aft flange at the aft end of the turbine casing. The turbine casing includes an outer casing wall and an inner casing wall at the aft end defining an airflow plenum therebetween that receives cooling air at an input end opposite to the aft flange. The spiral cooling system includes a plurality of fins secured to an inside surface of the outer wall and being spaced from the inner wall that directs the airflow from the input end in a circular manner around the plenum to an output end of the plenum.

A test rig that reproduces high temperature and high pressure conditions found in a gas turbine engine for testing materials under these conditions. The test rig includes a combustor surrounded by an upper plenum chamber and an exhaust plenum that receives a hot gas stream from the combustor. A transparent channeling vessel guides the hot gas stream from the combustor over a test specimen on which a material to be tested is mounted. The hot gas stream exits the clear channeling vessel and into the exhaust plenum where the stream is cooled by diluting the stream with cooling air. A viewing portal is located in the exhaust plenum so that the material can be observed through the clear vessel.

A turbine blade with a spar and shell construction in which the spar and the shell are both secured within two platform halves. The spar and the shell each include outward extending ledges on the bottom ends that fit within grooves formed on the inner sides of the platform halves to secure the spar and the shell against radial movement when the two platform halves are joined. The shell is also secured to the spar by hooks extending from the shell that slide into grooves formed on the outer surface of the spar. The hooks form a serpentine flow cooling passage between the shell and the spar. The spar includes cooling holes on the lower end in the leading edge region to discharge cooling air supplied through the platform root and into the leading edge cooling channel.

A thermal mechanical fatigue test rig for testing a coating, such as a thermal barrier coating, under high temperature and pressure to simulate the actual operating environment of the coating. The test rig includes a combustor to produce a hot gas flow, a hollow test specimen on which the coating is placed, and a sapphire vessel that encloses the hollow test specimen to form a hot gas flow path over the coating. The sapphire vessel is clear so that the coating can be observed by a camera during the testing. An exhaust plenum is formed around the sapphire vessel to collect the exhaust form the hot gas flow in which additional cooling air and water for quenching can be injected to reduce the temperature of the hot gas flow prior to discharge from the test rig.

A centrifugal pump or compressor with a labyrinth seal that produces an axial thrust balance when the impeller shifts in the axial direction due to fluid pressure forces acting on the impeller, and a process for reducing the axial thrust imbalance by regulating the fluid leakage from a front pressure cavity of the pump. The impeller includes a front face that forms part of a front pressure cavity in which fluid pressure acts that produces a thrust imbalance on the impeller. A labyrinth seal with a plurality of teeth is formed between the housing and the front face of the impeller near the impeller inlet. The teeth form gaps with lands formed on the impeller face, where the lands are slanted and stepped such that axial displacement of the impeller changes the gap space to regulate the fluid pressure acting in the front cavity. A self regulating fluid pressure is developed within the front cavity to produce a balancing force against the impeller.
