Tunable apodized multiple-focus ophthalmic devices and methods characterized by a lens with multiple optical zones each with an optical power optimized for one or more focal lengths and a tunable apodization mask positioned within at least a portion of the optical zone(s). Upon a desired change of focus for the wearer, an optical transmission characteristic of the tunable apodization mask may be varied. The tunable apodization mask may take the form of an electrochromic device or another suitable material.

Disclosed are powered or electronic ophthalmic devices or lenses which can have the ability to monitor and sense extreme gaze angle. Also disclosed is the use of extreme gaze angles to control the focal state of the lens as well as for augmenting, control of, or input to, other device parameters of the powered or electronic ophthalmic lens. Applicants have researched and determined what are believed to be acceptable ranges of both upward and downward extreme gaze angles which are not only measurably distinguishable from normally occurring gaze angles associated with everyday activities, but which are still achievable by the wearer if purposeful, as they are still within human eye movement capability.

A new vision test, incorporating textual and non-textual elements in an image, is configured to demonstrate the effects of low cylinder astigmatism and other sources of blur on visual quality. The elements are designed to be noticeable, relevant, important and engaging. The new vision test may be utilized to supplement conventional vision testing.

Devices and methods for controlling myopia are provided. The devices and methods relate to the inventors discovery of the relationship between near work, the forces applied to the eye by the eyelids and myopia. The devices include a contact lens comprising a region that disperses force applied to the eye by an eyelid. The devices also include a device designed by measuring first wavefront aberrations of an eye before pre-near work and measuring second measured wavefront aberrations of the eye post-near work. The methods include a method for controlling myopia including identifying optical changes associated with near work and correcting the optical changes with an optical device.
