A method and system for directly manipulating cells in an electronic spreadsheet program or the like. After the user has selected the cells to be manipulated, the user merely positions the cursor over any part of the outside border of the selected group of cells, depresses and holds down a predefined mouse button, drags the border to a new location and then releases the mouse button. Depending upon which mouse button or control key was depressed, the user may be presented with options such as whether the manipulation should be to move or copy the selected cells, or the selected cells may be moved and no option presented. Depending upon which control key was depressed or upon the location of the repositioned border, the selected cells may be pasted over existing cells, or they may be inserted into the spreadsheet causing the existing cells to be shifted right and/or down.

These and other objects, which will be apparent as the invention is more fully described, are provided by a method and system for constructing queries which make changes to an entire set of data stored in a database. In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, a user selects one or more tables from which to construct a query. Next, the system stores a list box for each selected table. Each list box is displayed on a user interface including a query window which includes an upper portion and a lower portion. The user selects one or more columns from the list boxes and drags the selected columns into a QBE grid located in the lower portion of the query window. The QBE grid provides a graphical representation of the query requested by the user. When the user invokes the query, the system determines the query type and performs appropriate action on the selected column from the selected tables.

A method and system for constructing queries which make changes to an entire set of data stored in a database is provided. A method and computer system for coaching a user how to perform application program tasks is provided. The user activates the coaching program of the present invention while an application program is running on the computer system. If the user needs such assistance, the coaching program helps the user determine the next task the user wishes to perform in the application program. The coaching program then determines if the application program is in the correct state for performance of the next task. If the application program is not in the correct state, the coaching program guides the user through performing essential preliminary tasks that place the application program in the correct state for performance of the next task. The computer system simultaneously displays on the display screen output, such as application program instructions, generated by the coaching program and a user interface display generated by the application program. Output generated by the coaching program always overlays the user interface display in such a way that it does not block the working portion of the user interface display and it does not interrupt the operation of the application program. The user performs the next task in the application program by interacting with the working portion of the user interface display, while the computer system continues to display the output generated by the coaching program. This enables the user to read instructions displayed on the display screen on how to perform the next task during performance of the next task.
