A grid structure and method for manufacturing the same. The grid is used for gating a stream of charged particles in certain types of particle measurement instruments, such as ion mobility spectrometers and the like. The methods include various microfabrication techniques for etching and/or depositing grid structure materials on a silicon substrate.

Microfabricated miniature grids

A method and apparatus for puncturing a surface for extraction, in situ monitoring, and/or substance delivery uses microneedles with improved properties. Applications include easy to handle glucose monitoring using a group of hollow out-of-plane silicon microneedles to sample substances in interstitial fluid from the epidermal skin layer.

The present invention relates generally to grids for gating a stream of charged particles and methods for manufacturing the same. In one embodiment, the present invention relates to a Bradbury-Nielson gate having transmission line grid elements. In one embodiment is a feed structure for a gating grid where a drive source is coupled to a feeding transmission line with the same geometry as the chopper and continues with the same geometry to a termination transmission line. Also included is a method for fabricating a gate for charged particles which includes micromachining at least two gate elements from at least one wafer, wherein each gate element includes at least one grid element; metalizing the grid elements; and assembling the gate elements such that the grid elements of the gate elements are interleaved, thereby forming a Bradbury Nielson gate.

Gating grid and method of manufacture

Micro-electro-mechanical (MEM) translational tabs are introduced for enhancing and controlling aerodynamic loading of lifting surfaces. These microtabs are mounted at or near the trailing edge of lifting surfaces, deploy approximately normal to the surface, and have a maximum deployment height on the order of the boundary layer thickness. Deployment of this type of device effectively changes the camber, thereby affecting the lift generated by the surface. The effect of these microtabs on lift is as powerful as conventional control surfaces such as ailerons. Application of this simple yet innovative lift enhancement and control device will permit the elimination of some of the bulky conventional high-lift and control systems and result in an overall reduction in system weight, complexity and cost.

Microfabricated translational stages for control of aerodynamic loading

A detector cell for a silicon-based or non-silicon-based sleeve type chemical reaction chamber that combines heaters, such as doped polysilicon for heating, and bulk silicon for convection cooling. The detector cell is an electrochemiluminescence cell constructed of layers of silicon with a cover layer of glass, with spaced electrodes located intermediate various layers forming the cell. The cell includes a cavity formed therein and fluid inlets for directing reaction fluid therein. The reaction chamber and detector cell may be utilized in any chemical reaction system for synthesis or processing of organic, inorganic, or biochemical reactions, such as the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and/or other DNA reactions, such as the ligase chain reaction, which are examples of a synthetic, thermal-cycling-based reaction. The ECL cell may also be used in synthesis instruments, particularly those for DNA amplification and synthesis.

Microfabricated electrochemiluminescence cell for chemical reaction detection

Low residual stress, stoichiometric or near stoichiometric, silicon nitride and silicon carbide films with thicknesses of one micron or greater are produced by reacting porous silicon with a nitrogen or carbon containing gas, such as ammonia or methane, at an appropriate temperature and pressure. The gas diffuses into the pores and reacts with the silicon skeletal structure. Because the initial structure is porous and the pore spaces provide strain relief during the addition reaction and subsequent volume expansion, the resultant film has relatively low residual stress. Either porous or solid films can be produced. This process provides a means to chemically stabilize porous silicon layers and their morphologies.

Formation of silicon nitride by nitridation of porous silicon

An interferometric-based pressure transducer is fabricated from two layers of silicon having different crystal orientations which have been processed using selective anisotropic etching to produce in one silicon layer a mirror surface and a groove that is aligned with the mirror, and a pressure-responsive membrane in the other layer. The layers are joined with the membrane opposite the mirror, and an optical fiber is secured in the groove so that light from the optical fiber is conveyed by the mirror surface between the membrane and the optical fiber. Conventional interferometric apparatus compares transmitted and received light in order to sense deformation of the membrane and thereby sense pressure.

Interferometric pressure sensor capable of high temperature operation

An infant toy is formed from a quilted fabric material stuffed with a cotton batting to form a pillow-like body. The pillow-like body is preferably formed in an ornamental shape and has an open top portion communicating with an interior lined pocket. A plurlaity of hook and loop fastening strips are secured at spaced locations on a front face of the body. A corresponding plurality of fabric patches have cooperating hook and loop fastening members for removably securing the fabric patches to the pillow-like body. The fabric patches are formed in a variety or ornametal shapes and each have a different surface texture. A plurality of elongated tie members each have one end secured to the pillow-like body and are preferably formed in a variety of different surface textures. The toy is designed for the amusement of infants and serves to provide visual and touch sensory stimulation. The toy may be suspended from a crib railing or may be utilized as a pillow.
