A process for preparing a dialkylester of a naphthalenedicarboxylic acid comprising directing a liquid phase reaction mixture comprising a low molecular weight alcohol, a naphthalenedicarboxylic acid, a dialkylester of a naphthalenedicarboxylic acid, and a polyethylene naphthalate containing material, at a given temperature and pressure through series arranged reaction zones and subsequently removing a product comprising a dialkylester formed by the reaction of the naphthalenedicarboxylic acid and the polyethylene naphthalate containing material with the low molecular weight alcohol from a reaction zone. This invention is also directed to a process for preparing a purified dialkylester of a naphthalenedicarboxylic acid comprising a series of crystallization and distillation steps, and combinations thereof.

Recycling polyethylene naphthalate containing materials in a process to produce diesters

A process for producing 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid by the liquid phase, exothermic oxidation of 2,6-dimethylnaphthalene comprising adding to a reaction zone oxidation reaction components comprising 2,6-dimethylnaphthalene, a source of molecular oxygen, a solvent comprising an aliphatic monocarboxylic acid, and a catalyst comprising cobalt, manganese and bromine components wherein the atom ratio of cobalt to manganese is at least about 1:1 and the total of cobalt and manganese, calculated as elemental cobalt and elemental manganese added to the reaction zone, is less than about 0.40 weight percent based on the weight of the solvent added to the reaction zone; maintaining the contents of the reaction zone at a temperature and pressure sufficient to cause the oxidation of 2,6-dimethylnaphthalene to 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid and the vaporization of at least a portion of the reaction solvent while maintaining a liquid phase reaction mixture; condensing the vaporized solvent and returning an amount of the condensed solvent to the reaction zone to maintain the amount of water in the reaction zone at no more than about 15 weight percent based on the weight of solvent in the reaction zone; and withdrawing from the reaction zone a mixture comprising 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid.

Process for preparing 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid

Provided is a continuous process for producing 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid by the liquid phase oxidation of 2,6-dimethylnaphthalene comprising continuously adding to a reaction zone the oxidation reaction components comprising 2,6-dimethylnaphthalene, a source of molecular oxygen, a solvent comprising an aliphatic monocarboxylic acid, and a catalyst comprising cobalt, manganese and bromine components, wherein the atom ratio of manganese to cobalt is about 5:1 to about 0.3:1, the total of cobalt and manganese is at least about 0.40 weight percent based on the weight of solvent, and maintaining the contents of the reaction zone at a temperature of about 370.degree. F. to about 420.degree. F. and at a pressure sufficient to maintain at least a portion of the monocarboxylic acid in the liquid phase thereby oxidizing the 2,6-dimethylnaphthalene to 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid. By operating according to the process of this invention, 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid can be continuously produced in high yield and with low levels of impurities.

Process for preparing 2,6-naphthalene-dicarboxylic acid

A process is disclosed for the co-production of aliphatic monocarboxylic acids and polycarboxylic aromatic acids in high selectivity, conversion and yield. The aliphatic monocarboxylic acid can serve as a component of the solvent for the process.
