A method of forming a skin-foam-substrate type structure particular suitable as an automobile trim component. The method comprises supplying a polymer resin containing a chemical foaming agent and including metal particles capable of inductive heating, that is positioned between a polymeric skin and substrate, followed by inductive heating to cause foaming of the polymeric resin. The foamed polymer resin adheres to the skin and substrate.

Skin-foam-substrate structure via induction heating

Methods for forming a TPE-skinned composite include forming a skin layer having at least one surface and having a thermoplastic elastomer and an adhesive promoting agent; providing a foam layer; and forming the foam layer onto the said surface of the skin layer to form the TPE-skinned composite. Optional additives such as an organo-silane compound may be added to further improve the adhesion between the skin layer and the foam. The present disclosure also provides a TPE-skinned composite including a skin layer having a thermoplastic elastomer present in an amount of greater than 90 wt. %; and an adhesive promoting agent present in an amount of from 0.5 wt. % to 10 wt. % based upon the total weight of the skin layer.

In particular, the present disclosure identifies the ability to form extrudable floor mats suitable for interior vehicular applications where the recycle content includes recycling of selected amounts of a laminate of crosslinked polyolefin foam and thermoplastic polyolefin resin.

An acoustic insulator for a motor vehicle is provided comprising a mass providing an acoustic barrier and a spring providing an acoustic absorber overlying the mass. The mass comprises a first acoustic mass layer underlying a second acoustic mass layer. The first acoustic mass layer is provided by a thermoplastic sheet having a thickness in a range of 0.5 mm to 1 mm. The second acoustic mass layer is provided at one or more localized areas formed in place on a backside surface of the first acoustic mass layer to increase an overall thickness of the mass at the one or more localized areas. The spring layer is formed in place on a backside of the second acoustic mass layer and the backside of the first acoustic mass layer.

Motor vehicle acoustic insulator, methods of manufacture and use thereof

The present invention relates to a slush moldable polymeric composition for forming a skin useable in interior trim components and methods of making the same. In at least one embodiment, the composition comprises a) from 50 to 99 wt. percent urethane elastomer, b) from 0.1 to 15 wt. percent propylene copolymer, c) from 0.1 to 25 wt. percent olefin modified thermoplastic, such as SEBS, and d) from 0.1 to 30 weight percent olefinic block copolymer, wherein the polymeric composition is slush moldable and vacuum formable. The modifiers include an olefin block copolymer (OBC) having a variable distribution of block lengths. The OBC is present in an amount from 0.1% to 30% of the total composition. The haptics of the polymeric composition is tunable by adjusting the amounts of the modifiers.

A thermoplastic olefin resin composition having improved resistance to surface impacts, such as scratching, marring and gouging, is provided. The thermoplastic olefin resin comprises a blend of polyolefin alloy and polyamide components. The components have relative melt flow rates such that the polyamide component is selectively segregated toward the front of a melt flow. A compatibilizing agent is added to overcome the natural incompatibility of the polyolefin alloy and polyamide components of the resin. The thermoplastic olefin resin may further include a filler material when increased stiffness or modulus is desired.

The method comprises providing a thermoplastic olefin prepared from a TPO blend comprising maleated polypropylene and amine-terminated polyether. A paintable, reactor grade thermoplastic olefin (TPO) comprising a blend of elastomer and polypropylene. The elastomer is present in an amount of about 10 to 35% by weight, based on the weight of the TPO. The elastomer comprising about 40 to about 60% by weight polyethylene, based on the weight of the elastomer. The TPO has a viscosity ratio of polypropylene to elastomer of about 50:1 to about 700:1.

A multi-layer molded polymer composition comprising a polyolefin layer and a immiscible polymer layer adjacent the polyolefin layer. The immiscible polymer layer is selected from a polymer that is normally immiscible for the polyolefin layer. A compatibilizer is blended into either the polyolefin layer or the immiscible polymer layer or optionally into both layers. The compatibilizer has a polyolefin backbone that is miscible in the polyolefin layer and one or more functional polymer grafts attached to the compatibilizer polyolefin backbone. The functional polymer grafts are miscible in the immiscible polymer layer whereby the compatibilizer bonds with both the polyolefin layer and the immiscible polymer layer.
