A vial cap for removing a matrix component from a liquid sample is described. The vial cap includes a cap body, an inlet portion, and an outlet portion. The cap body is configured to have a slidable gas and liquid seal with a side wall of a sample vial. The inlet portion includes a counterbore section that holds a filter plug. The filter plug includes a polyethylene resin and a material selected from the group consisting of an ion exchange material and a reversed-phase material. The vial cap is adapted for solid phase extraction for use in an autosampler with a plurality of sample vials.

Vial cap and method for removing matrix components from a liquid sample

A method of making an ion exchange foam is described. The method includes forming an aqueous phase by suspending an ion exchange resin in an aqueous solvent. An organic phase is formed by mixing at least a divinylbenzene, a monomer, and a surfactant. The formed aqueous phase is mixed with the formed organic phase to form an emulsion. The emulsion is polymerized to form the ion exchange foam. The ion exchange foam can be used with a plurality of sample vials in an autosampler.

Ion exchange foams to remove ions from samples

A surrogate addition device is described that adds a surrogate compound at a uniform transport rate to a flowing sample stream. The surrogate addition device includes a surrogate reservoir, a flow chamber, and a diffusion barrier. The surrogate reservoir can be configured to contain a surrogate solution where the surrogate solution includes a surrogate compound. The flow chamber includes an inlet port and an outlet port. At least a portion of the diffusion barrier is disposed in between the surrogate reservoir and the flow chamber. The diffusion barrier may include an inner surface that forms a wall of the surrogate reservoir, and an outer surface that forms a wall of the flow chamber. The flow chamber can be configured to receive a flowing sample solution across the outer surface of the diffusion barrier and also to diffuse the surrogate compound from the surrogate reservoir to the flow chamber.

Removal of borate in chromatography

Selected polyvalent anions or cations are removed from a liquid sample stream as a pretreatment for the analysis of the liquid sample stream. A stream containing anions of interest, precipitable anions (e.g. sulfate ions) to be removed and an added displacing salt flow through a first cation exchange resin bed having precipitable exchangeable polyvalent ions (e.g. barium ions). Displacing polyvalent cation (e.g. calcium) displaces the exchangeable polyvalent ion from the cation exchange resin into the liquid sample at sufficient concentration to cause the precipitable anion and exchangeable cation to form a precipitate which remains in the resin bed and is thus is removed from the sample stream. Then the anions of interest in the soluble portion of the liquid sample stream are separated and detected. The invention is also applicable to the removal of precipitable cations (e.g. barium ions) by reversing the roles of the anions and cations.

The constituents of a liquid stream are analyzed by flowing the stream through a hollow tube or fiber with spaced protuberances of a character to disrupt laminar flow and to produce turbulence. In one embodiment, the tubing includes ion exchange sites and is preferentially permeable to one of the ions of an electrolyte. In this manner, the tubing is useful as an electrolyte suppressor in ion chromatography in which the analyte ions are separated by chromatography using the electrolyte and the electrolyte is converted to weakly ionized form by passage through the tubing prior to conductivity detection.
