The present invention relates to novel (per)fluoropolyether polymers characterized by high molecular weight and high functionality, to a process for their manufacture and to their use as intermediate compounds in the preparation of further polymers.

Amino derivatives of perfluoropolyethers

A method of manufacturing cyclophosphazenes PFPE derivatives to be used in the lubrication of magnetic recording media is herein provided. The method comprises: a) a (per)fluoropolyether (PFPE) polyol [PFPE (P)] comprising a fluoropolyoxyalkylene chain (R) having two chain ends, each chain end comprising at least one hydroxy group, and b) the corresponding alkoxide of perfluoropolyether (P) [PFPE (P)] wherein the equivalent concentration of PFPE (P) in PFPE (P) is lower than 30%, preferably ranging from 5% to 15%; 2) contacting mixture (M) with a perhalocyclophosphazene (CP) to provide a mixture (M1) containing an equivalent ratio of PFPE (P)/(CP) of at least 1; 3) allowing mixture (M1) to react until complete disappearance of P&#x2014;Cl groups to provide a mixture (M2); 4) submitting mixture (M2) to hydrolysis to provide a mixture (M3); 5) optionally removing (P) from mixture (M3) to provide a mixture (M4). A method of purifying mixture (M4) is also herein provided.

A process for purifying a polyol(per)fluoropolyether derivative [polyol (P)] from a mixture (M) of hydroxyl(per)fluoropolyether derivatives, such polyol (P) comprising one or more hydroxyl(per)fluoropolyether derivatives [PFPEs (OH)] comprising at least one (per)fluoropolyoxyalkylene chain (chain R) and at least one end-group having formula (t): &#x2014;CFCHOCHCH(OH)CHOCHCH(OH)CHOH, such mixture (M) comprising said polyol (P) and at least one hydroxyl(per)fluoropolyether derivative [PFPE (OH)] different from polyol (P) and comprising at least one chain Rand at least one end-group selected from end-groups having formula (t): &#x2014;CFCHOH and formula (t): &#x2014;CFCHOCHCH(OH)CHOH. The process comprises the following steps: 1) reacting the mixture (M) with a ketone, an aldehyde, or a combination thereof to yield corresponding mixture of cyclic ketal/acetal(per)fluoropolyether derivatives [PFPEs (OH)] [protected mixture (P)]; 2): submitting the protected mixture (P) to adsorption on silica gel to yield an adsorbed protected product [adsorbed product (P)] and then recovering a desorbed protected product [desorbed product (P)] by subsequent desorption from silica gel of the adsorbed product (P); 3) distilling the desorbed product (P) under reduced pressure to isolate a protected product residue [product (P)]; and 4) hydrolyzing the product (P) to obtain polyol (P).
