An apparatus adapted for measuring the properties of periodic signals and a method for making such measurements is disclosed. The apparatus includes a LO signal generator, a mixer, a low pass filter and an output device. The LO signal generator generates an LO signal comprising a fundamental frequency &#x3c9;and one or more higher harmonics with arbitrary amplitudes and phases. The mixer receives a periodic input signal having harmonics including a highest harmonic of interest, N, and a fundamental frequency, &#x3c9;. The mixer outputs an IF signal that is filtered. The filtered IF signal includes a frequency-compressed signal having M harmonics including a fundamental characterized by a frequency &#x3c9;&#x3c;&#x3c9;. Each of the harmonics in the frequency-compressed signal corresponds to one of the harmonics in the input signal and has an amplitude related to the amplitude of the corresponding harmonic in the input signal.

An optoelectronic system includes an optical signal modulator, an optical input guide and an optical output guide connected to the optical signal modulator. The system further includes a reflective optical element in the optical signal modulator, the element disposed to reflect an input light beam incident through the optical input guide into an output light beam through the optical output guide. The system further includes electrical terminals in the optical signal modulator. The electrical terminals are configured such that an electrical signal on the electrical terminals is operable to interact with the input light beam.

Method and apparatus for time aligning first and second signals. The second signal is modulated by the first signal to provide a third signal. Frequency components of the third signal are then determined, the frequency components being indicative of time alignment between the first and second signals. The method and apparatus is particularly suitable for converting a Non-Return-to-Zero data signal to a Return-to-Zero data signal by modulating the Non-Return-to-Zero data signal with a Return-to-Zero pulse signal. The method and apparatus provides for the Non-Return-to-Zero data signal and the Return-to-Zero pulse signal being correctly time aligned in an automated manner without human intervention.
