Provided are devices, and methods for use with devices, that generate oxygen from residual humidity within a sealed enclosure that is filled primarily with an inert gas. A PEM electrolyzer that is configured to generate oxygen from residual humidity is situated within the sealed enclosure. The PEM electrolyzer includes a PE membrane disposed between an anode and a cathode, and further includes a hydrogen getter. The hydrogen getter helps the PEM electrolyzer to be a net producer of oxygen. Exemplary sealed enclosure devices include hard disk drives such as HAMR hard drives filled primarily with helium.

Devices and methods for generating oxygen from residual humidity within sealed enclosures

Electronic devices that include a composition that can generate a gaseous oxidizing agent component; and a generating device configured to actively cause the composition to generate the gaseous oxidizing agent component. The generating device includes at least one metal-air battery that is in electrical communication with a power source that is configured to apply power to the metal-air battery according to a predetermined time interval to recharge the metal-air battery to generate the gaseous oxidizing agent component.

The interior gas space may include between about 97% and about 99.9% helium expressed as a molar fraction and at least a portion of the remainder as molecular oxygen. The sorbent can include at least one of a type A zeolite, a type X zeolite, or a type Y zeolite.

A control method is provided for loading a data transfer head to a data storage medium comprising: determining a desired maximum displacement between a parked position of the head and an encroaching position of the head in relation to a selected data storage track of the medium; determining a spin interval associated with a predetermined quantity of medium movement before the head reaches the encroaching position; rotating the data storage medium at a beginning of the spin interval; and moving the actuator during the spin interval from the parked position and at a velocity resulting in the head being displaced at the end of the spin interval a distance that is less than the maximum displacement. A data storage device is contemplated comprising programmed instructions for performing this method for a predetermined number of loading occurrences, or in relation to observing a threshold data transfer error rate.
