A method in a receiver includes receiving a signal that traversed a multipath channel having a channel response, so as to produce a received sequence of samples that are indicative of the channel response. Using a predefined similarity measure, multiple metrics between the received sequence of samples and multiple respective candidate sequences of samples are calculated by the receiver. Each candidate sequence includes a combination of one or more dominant signal components having respective sample delays, and each candidate sequence corresponds to a channel multipath candidate that has one or more channel paths at the respective sample delays. The channel response is estimated by the receiver, by selecting the candidate sequence that best matches the received sequence, the selecting being based on the similarity measure.

Channel estimation by searching over channel response candidates having dominant components

A method includes, in a mobile communication terminal, storing a mathematical model for computing a covariance matrix of data conveying signals that are received at the mobile communication terminal. At least a first data conveying signal is received in the mobile communication terminal, and one or more signal components required by the model are extracted from the first data conveying signal. A determination is made whether the model is suitable for computing the covariance matrix for the first data conveying signal based on a predefined rule. The covariance matrix is computed in the mobile communication terminal using at least one of the model and an empirical-based estimation of the covariance matrix. The covariance matrix is selected in response to the determination.

Adaptive signal covariance estimation for MMSE equalization

A method for controlling output signal power in a communication terminal includes accepting, from first and second measurement points along a transmission chain in a transmitter of the terminal, respective first and second signal representations of a communication signal to be transmitted by the communication terminal. A cross-correlation is computed between the first and second signal representations accepted from the first and second measurement points. An actual gain between the first and second measurement points is computed using the cross-correlation. An output power of the communication signal is adjusted by setting a gain of the transmitter responsively to the actual gain.

Power control using fast signal time alignment

A circuit includes a transmit path to receive an input signal and generate an output signal to be output at a transmit power level according to a power target signal. The circuit also includes a gain corrector to output a signal for adjusting a power level of the output signal to correspond to the transmit power level. The signal for adjusting is based on the power target signal and a delay for time-aligning a first signal and a second signal.

Method for fast automatic power control of wireless transmitters

A method for DC offset cancellation includes defining, in a range of possible gain values for operating a direct conversion receiver, multiple sub-ranges of the possible gain values. Multiple DC offset correction values for the respective sub-ranges are stored in a memory. Upon detecting at the receiver that a gain of the receiver has changed from a first sub-range to a second sub-range, DC offset cancellation is initiated based on a DC offset correction value stored for the second sub-range and on a condition relating to past operation in the second sub-range.

Power control using fast signal correlation

A method includes receiving a signal using a direct conversion receiver, while the receiver is set at a gain that is selected from a range of possible gain values. Multiple DC offset correction values are provided for use by a DC offset cancellation loop, each DC offset correction value being associated with a respective sub-range of the range of the possible gain values. A DC offset correction value is selected from among the multiple DC offset correction values based on the gain to which the receiver is set. A DC offset in the signal is canceled by setting the DC offset cancellation loop to the selected DC offset correction value.

A method for controlling output signal power in a communication terminal includes determining envelopes of a communication signal to be transmitted by the communication terminal at respective first and second measurement points along a transmission chain in a transmitter of the terminal. A cross-correlation is computed between the envelopes determined at the first and second measurement points. An actual gain between the first and second measurement points is computed using the cross-correlation. An output power of the communication signal is adjusted by setting a gain of the transmitter responsively to the actual gain.

The channel estimator includes a symbol probability generator, a noise variance estimator and a channel tap estimator. The symbol probability generator generates a priori probabilities only of transmitted symbols found in the received signal(s). The noise variance estimator estimates at least one noise variance corrupting the received signal(s).
