A compact speaker is enabled to mount into panels made with either of two different sized standard mounting cutout patterns, e.g. Japanese JIS or the larger European DIN, providing the small JIS overall basket diameter along with an unusually large effective cone &ldquo;air piston&rdquo; diameter with full excursion for enhanced low frequency response. For mounting to a JIS-configured panel, an annular adaptor ring is configured with an array of four mounting screw clearance holes in a JIS pattern by which the ring is attached to the panel, and four threaded holes on a larger circle by which the basket is then attached to the ring by relatively small sized machine screws. For mounting to a DIN-configured panel, the adaptor ring is not used: the plastic basket is configured with four extending ears providing clearance mounting holes at DIN mounting locations for self-tapping screws by which the speaker is mounted to the DIN-type panel. The ears are made such that for JIS mounting, where they are not used, they can be snapped off and removed to avoid interference with close surroundings.

An audio speaker unit including a low-frequency range speaker providing a first sound output directivity along a center axis with a conical diaphragm extending outwardly from a neck to an outer edge and a high-frequency range speaker rotatably mounted to the unit along the center axis of the low-frequency range speaker and positioned within the conical diaphragm and below the outer edge and having a second sound output directivity fixed at an angle to the center axis of the low-frequency range speaker so that by rotating the high-frequency range speaker, the second sound directivity can be arcuately positioned in at least one plane perpendicular to the center axis.

An improvement in small round loudspeakers of popular standard types used in vehicle assembly is obtained by modifying a standard-sized basket in a manner to provide a polar array of special mounting openings located on a concentric mounting circle of larger than standard diameter, thus allowing the use of a larger cone for improved performance and allowing the loudspeaker to be mounted in different-sized popular mounting hole patterns in the baffle panel; for example an aspect of the invention enables the '6.5 inch basket', associated with Asian-built vehicles, to be fitted with a larger-sized cone used in the '170 mm basket' associated with European-built vehicles, thus providing a loudspeaker, with the improved performance of the larger cone, that can be installed in a range of different baffle panel cutout sizes and configurations of either type of vehicle. In a twist-lock embodiment, an array of elongated slots, typically four, configured in the rear side of the peripheral mounting flange of the loudspeaker, enables twist-lock installation and removal, by engaging a corresponding array of specially-shaped lock tabs associated with the baffle panel. The lock tabs may formed on a sheet metal ring that can be attached to the baffle panel by bolts, screws, rivets or other fasteners prior to installing the loudspeaker. A forward-facing raised landing surface of the loudspeaker flange, which normally carries protruding mounting screw heads, is left clear to provide an unobstructed flat surface for adhesive attachment of the surround suspension of the larger cone.
