Aqueous intumescent coating compositions which include a non-ionic surfactant having a hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB) of 9 to 20, and substrates coated with the coating composition are disclosed. Inclusion of the non-ionic surfactant in the coating compositions is found to reduce char cracking and improve the mechanical strength, cell size, and cell density for intumescent chars formed when coatings deposited from the coating compositions are exposed to open flame and/or elevated temperatures, as compared to the same coatings lacking the non-ionic surfactants.

Surfactants for intumescent foam stabilization

Self-crosslinkable binder compositions which include a copolymer obtained by reacting a mixture of monomers in the presence of an organic solvent, wherein the monomer mixture includes a carboxylic acid monomer, a polymerizable ethylenically unsaturated monomer, and a crosslinkable acrylamide monomer. Intumescent coatings containing the self-crosslinkable binder, and substrates coated with the intumescent coatings are also disclosed.

Crosslinkable binders for solvent based intumescent coatings

An intumescent coating composition that includes an epoxy resin binder, an epoxy reactive diluent, a curing agent and an acid catalyst. The curing agent includes a mixture of polyimide, polyetheramine, and an amine functional monomer, wherein the amine multifunctional monomer is different from the polyetheramine. The acid catalyst is effective to form a phosphoric acid on thermal decomposition. The coating composition has a viscosity of between 20,000 and 140,000 mPa/s at 20&#xb0; C. and shear rate 1.5 swhen measured within 1 minute of mixing the components. The invention also includes a coated substrate having the intumescent coating composition coated on at least a portion thereof.

Solventborne binder compositions which include a copolymer obtained by reacting a mixture of monomers in the presence of an organic solvent, wherein the monomer mixture includes an ethylenically unsaturated monomer and a vinyl ester monomer having a formula CHCH&#x2014;X&#x2014;C(&#x2550;O)&#x2014;R, where R is a linear or branched alkyl group having 2 to 18 carbon atoms, an aromatic group having 6 to 12 carbon atoms, or R is bonded to X to form a 5- to 7-member ring, and X is O. Intumescent coatings containing the solventborne binder compositions, and substrates coated with the intumescent coatings are also disclosed.

Solventborne binder for an intumescent coating

An intumescent coating composition and a coated metal substrate are described. The composition comprises: (a) a polymeric binder; (b) an acid catalyst effective to form a polyphosphoric acid on thermal decomposition; (c) a solid carbon donor; (d) a liquid carbon donor in the form of one or more polyhydric alcohols effective to form a phosphoric acid ester on contact with phosphoric acid; (e) an expansion agent; (f) one or more pigments; (g) optionally, one or more other additives; (h) a liquid carrier for the polymeric binder The ratio of combined components (b), (c), (e) and (f):(a) is at least 4:1 w/w. A coating composition wherein the concentration of components (b), (e) and (f) is in the range 55-75% w/w solids is further described.
