A method for generating control command data for controlling a CNC-lathe to perform a turning operation by means of a turning tool. The method includes the steps of: generating control command data for commanding the turning tool to go into cut at a point of the unmachined inner surface, which is most far away from the end position; and commanding the turning tool to move along the inner surface towards the end position until either: the turning tool reaches the end position, or a cutting depth is equal to or greater than one of either: the maximum allowed cutting depth or the recommended cutting depth, whereby the turning tool is commanded to move away from the inner surface; or the turning tool reaches a predefined position, whereby the turning tool is commanded to move away from the inner surface.

Method for generating control command data for controlling a CNC-lathe

A turning insert includes a top surface, a bottom surface, and side surfaces connecting the top and bottom surfaces. A reference plane is located parallel to and between the top surface and the bottom surface. A center axis intersects and extends perpendicular to the reference plane. Three nose portions are formed symmetrically around the center axis. Each nose portion has a first cutting edge, a second cutting edge and a convex nose cutting edge connecting the first and second cutting edges. As seen in in a top view, the first and second cutting edges on the same nose portion form a nose angle of 25-50°. The first cutting edge includes a first sub-portion and a second sub-portion. A distance from the nose cutting edge to the first sub-portion is shorter than a distance from the nose cutting edge to the second sub-portion.

A turning insert includes a top surface, an opposite bottom surface, and a reference plane therebetween. A center axis intersects the top and bottom surfaces and a side surface connects the top and bottom surfaces. A circular cutting edge is adjacent the top surface and the side surface. The top surface includes a set of first protrusions, which are elongated in a direction parallel to the adjacent cutting edge. A greatest distance from the reference plane to the first protrusions is greater than a distance from the reference plane to the cutting edge. The bottom surface has a set of radial grooves and includes a set of flat surfaces. The flat surfaces extend in a plane parallel to the reference plane, wherein in a top view each first protrusion is symmetrical in relation to a line extending between the center axis and a mid-point of the first protrusion.

A nose portion includes a convex nose cutting edge, and a first and a second cutting edge. The nose cutting edge connects the first and second cutting edges. The first and second cutting edges form a nose angle of 71-85&#xb0; relative to each other. The nose portion has a third convex cutting edge adjacent to the first cutting edge and a fourth cutting edge adjacent to the third convex cutting edge. The fourth cutting edge forms an angle of 10-30&#xb0; relative to a bisector. The distance from at least a portion of the fourth cutting edge to the reference plane increases at an increasing distance from the nose cutting edge. A second protrusion is arranged between the nose cutting edge and the first protrusion.

Turning insert

A turning tool includes a tool body and a turning insert, and an insert seat in which the turning insert is mounted. The insert seat includes a bottom surface and a side surface, the side surface having a first surface and a second surface. The first surface includes a contact surface, wherein the contact surface is in contact with a portion of the side surface of the turning insert. The tool body includes a coolant channel, which extends between a coolant channel inlet and a coolant channel outlet opening into a void between the side surface of the turning insert and the first surface of the side surface of the insert seat.

A method to form a surface on a metal work piece includes providing a turning insert that has a nose angle formed between first and second cutting edges less than or equal to 85&#xb0;; providing a turning tool having a tool body with an insert seat in which the turning insert is mountable; arranging the orientation of the second cutting edge such that it forms a back clearance angle of more than 90&#xb0; in a feed direction; rotating the metal work piece around a rotational axis in a first direction; moving the turning insert in a direction parallel to or at an angle less than 45&#xb0; relative to the rotational axis; and setting the longitudinal axis of the tool body at an angle greater than zero but less than or equal to 90&#xb0; relative to the rotational axis of the metal work piece.

Method to machine a metal work piece by turning

A turning tool for internal turning of a metal work piece having a rear end, an opposite forward end and a longitudinal center axis extending therebetween. The first nose cutting edge includes a first radially distal point having an associated first rake face and separates and connects a first forward cutting edge and a first rearward cutting edge. A second nose cutting edge of the turning tool includes a second radially distal point having an associated second rake face and separates and connects a second forward cutting edge and a second rearward cutting edge. The second radially distal point is positioned ahead of the first radially distal point. The first forward cutting edge forms an acute first entering angle, the second forward cutting edge forms an obtuse second back clearance angle, and the second rearward cutting edge forms an acute second entering angle.

The distance from the first cutting edge to the reference plane varies in such a way that that this distance is decreasing at increasing distance from the nose cutting edge.

A method to form a surface on a metal work piece includes providing a turning insert having a first cutting edge, a second cutting edge and a convex nose cutting edge connecting the first and second cutting edges, a nose angle formed between the first and second cutting edges being less than or equal to 85&#xb0;; arranging the second cutting edge such that it forms a back clearance angle of more than 90&#xb0; in a feed direction; positioning all parts of the turning insert ahead of the nose cutting edge in the feed direction; rotating the metal work piece around a rotational axis in a first direction; and moving the turning insert in a direction parallel to or at an angle less than 45&#xb0; relative to the rotational axis, such that the surface at least partly is formed by the nose cutting edge.

A turning insert includes a top surface, an opposite bottom surface, side surfaces connecting the top surface and the bottom surface and two opposite nose portions. Each nose portion includes a convex nose cutting edge, a first cutting edge and a second cutting edge. The convex nose cutting edge connects the first and second cutting edges. A bisector extends equidistantly from the first and second cutting edges. In a top view the first and second cutting edges on the same nose portion form a nose angle (&#x3b1;) of 70-85&#xb0; relative to each other. Each nose portion includes a third convex cutting edge adjacent to the first cutting edge and a fourth cutting edge adjacent to the third cutting edge. In a top view the fourth cutting edge forms an angle (&#x3b2;) of 0-34&#xb0; relative to the bisector.

The present disclosure relates to a polygonal turning insert having primary cutting edges, which individually include a nose edge and two main edges, which converge toward the same. Behind the nose edge, chip-directing guide surfaces are formed, on one hand, with a breast surface included in a knob situated behind the nose edge along a bisector between the main edges, and, on the other hand, with a pair of flank surfaces included in a land there behind. At a distance behind the knob, there is formed a second breast surface, the upper part of which is situated on a higher level than the upper part of the first breast surface. In such a way, it is guaranteed that thin chips, which tend to pass or jump over the first breast surface without being affected by the same, will impinge on the second, higher breast surface and be subjected to guiding by the same.

Polygonal turning insert

A cutting insert for turning includes an upper side, a lower side, a clearance surface connecting the upper side and the lower side, and an upper cutting edge. The upper cutting edge forms a primary edge portion and a secondary edge portion connected by a nose edge portion. On the upper side, a chip former is formed, including a nose bottom surface formed behind the nose edge portion, a primary main bottom surface extending along the primary edge portion, and, between the nose bottom surface and the primary main bottom surface, a continuous primary elevated bottom surface extending along the primary edge portion, having a lowest point lower than the level of the primary edge portion but higher than the lowest point of each of the nose bottom surface and the primary main bottom surface.
