An invert emulsion is used to form a hydrated flocculated polymer useful in reducing fluid loss in downhole operations. The invert emulsion can be sheared to form the hydrated flocculated polymer, which can be introduced downhole into the fluid loss flow path in a subterranean formation and allowed to accumulate at the pore throat to reduce fluid loss.

A suspending agent composition comprising (i) a fast hydrating guar gum and (ii) a high molecular weight polysaccharide, wherein the suspending agent composition has a rheological coupling ratio for yield point ranging from about 1 to about 2 when placed in an aqueous solution at a concentration of equal to or less than about 0.5 grams/deciliter and a ratio of about 90 weight percent (wt. %) fast hydrating guar gum and 10 wt. % high molecular weight polysaccharide. The invention is directed to a method for designing cement slurry compositions based on toughness. The method addresses the problem of achieving a cement slurry with a desired toughness by iteratively selecting a cementitious material and water, including their concentrations, to form a cement slurry recipe. A toughness model, utilizing physicochemical properties of the recipe components, calculates the toughness of the slurry. The calculated toughness is compared to a predetermined toughness requirement. If the requirement is not met, the selection process is repeated with different materials or concentrations until the toughness requirement is satisfied. The resulting cement slurry recipe is used to prepare a cement slurry suitable for applications requiring specific toughness characteristics such as in wellbore cementing.

Designing cement that withstands perforations and other impact loads

Methods and systems are provided for designing and determining a well service in the presence of loss, including the volume, rates, and duration of pumping of fluids in the presence of losses. A method of designing services for wellbores includes calibrating a loss circulation model with input comprising wellbore state to update the loss circulation model with formation loss zone characteristics; applying the loss circulation model to output at least a prediction of loss rate; and designing a wellbore service at least partially based on the prediction of the loss rate.

Methods for cementing. An example method provides a cement composition comprising an aqueous fluid, a cement, and a cement retarder; wherein the cement retarder is a waste residue from a manufacturing process of a sweetener and comprises a sugar concentration of at least 40%, a Brix value of at least 60, a nitrogen-free extract concentration of at least 50%, a total solids concentration of at least 60%, a crude protein concentration less than 10%, a fat concentration less than 5%, a fiber concentration less than 5%, and an ash concentration less than 10%. The method also introduces the cement composition into a wellbore penetrating a subterranean formation and pumps the cement composition to a location within the wellbore, and allows the cement composition to set in the location.

A method for designing a cement composition may include: providing a target compressive strength and a target composition density; selecting at least one cementitious material from a plurality of cementitious materials; calculating a required amount of water to produce a cement composition with the target composition density, the cement composition comprising the water and the at least one cementitious material; calculating a compressive strength of the cement composition based at least in part on a model of compressive strength; comparing the calculated compressive strength to the target compressive strength; and preparing the cement composition with the calculated compressive strength.

Methods and compositions for treating subterranean formations to mitigate lost circulation are provided. The methods of the present disclosure include forming a treatment fluid including one or more geopolymer lost circulation materials; introducing the treatment fluid into at least a portion of a subterranean formation that includes at least one loss zone; activating the geopolymer lost circulation materials to form a geopolymer that imparts a thixotropic property to the treatment fluid; and allowing the treatment fluid exhibiting the thixotropic property to at least partially reduce a rate of loss associated with the loss zone.

Slurry design process

Systems and methods related to preparing foamed cement for laboratory analysis are provided. A prepared cement slurry is placed in a cement reservoir cell configured to pressurize the cement slurry contained within the cement reservoir cell to a capture pressure. After pressurization, the cement slurry and a compressed gas are introduced into a foam generator. Foamed cement generated in the foam generator is introduced from the tee into a foam capture cell where it can cure prior to analysis.

Designing a cement slurry with a Young's modulus requirement

An apparatus for measuring mechanical properties of a downhole material, including first and second fixtures each of the fixtures containing a force application fixture to apply a stress to a specimen of the downhole material. A confining sleeve wraps around portions of the first and second fixtures to form a sealed specimen chamber defined by an inner surface of the confining sleeve and ends of the first and second fixtures nearest the specimen. Wall of a confining chamber contain the first and second fixtures, the confining sleeve and the specimen therein. The confining chamber holds a hydraulic fluid therein such that the hydraulic fluid can exert a confining pressure on the confining sleeve to maintain the seal of the specimen chamber and to maintain contact between the inner surface of the confining sleeve and the specimen when the stress is applied to the specimen. First channels pass though one or more of the walls of the confining chamber to add and remove the hydraulic fluid to and from the confining chamber. Second channels pass though one or more of the walls of the confining chamber and through one of the first and second fixtures to add and remove a pore space fluid to and from specimen chamber ports open to the specimen chamber to maintain a pore pressure at the specimen chamber ports that is equal to or less than the confining pressure while the stress is applied to the specimen. A system and method are also disclosed.
