Embodiments of the present invention described and shown in the specification and drawings facilitate the transportation of data packets having diverse formats through a general packet switching system. Due to the diverse formats of the data packets used by various common communications protocols, it is has been difficult to produce general packet switching systems that are able to switch multiple protocols. Embodiments of the present invention provide a Unified Data Packet for encapsulating data packets having diverse formats. Through encapsulation, embodiments of the present invention improve switching system efficiency by providing a single data packet format for handling by the switching system while enabling data packets in diverse formats to pass through the switch.

Embodiments of the present invention described and shown in the specification and drawings facilitate data packet transportation. One aspect of the invention multiplexes time-sensitive TDM (Time Division Multiplexed) and other synchronous data, and asynchronous data traffic, onto a communication channel in a manner that minimizes jitter in the delivery of the TDM data traffic while efficiently transporting asynchronous data traffic. Another aspect of the invention provides dynamic bandwidth sharing on a communication ring. The dynamic bandwidth sharing aspect of the present invention facilitates the efficient utilization of bandwidth of communication rings, particularly in those rings that cover large geographic areas.

Apparatus and method for facilitating data packet transportation

A single, normally inactive, protection channel provides protection against transponder failure in a fiber optic ring network. The protection channel is established and put into operation by a series of steps that are triggered by the detection of loss of light from one transponder by the other transponder. Each node reacts to a loss of light from another node in the same way: by rerouting incoming traffic from external sources from a working input-output interface to a protection interface, to establish a path for the protection signal, and by sending a signal enabling the two nodes to resume communication.

Signals are sent between nodes enabling the two nodes to resume communication. Only the portion of the protection ring between nodes is placed into service.
