A method is disclosed for forming a blended phosphor composition. The method includes the steps of firing precursor compositions that include europium and nitrides of at least calcium, strontium and aluminum, in a refractory metal crucible and in the presence of a gas that precludes the formation of nitride compositions between the nitride starting materials and the refractory metal that forms the crucible. The resulting compositions can include phosphors that convert frequencies in the blue portion of the visible spectrum into frequencies in the red portion of the visible spectrum.

Phosphor composition

LED lamps or bulbs are disclosed that comprise a light source, a heat sink structure and a remote phosphor carrier having at least one conversion material. The phosphor carrier can be remote to the light sources and mounted to the heat sink. The phosphor carrier can have a three-dimensional shape and comprise a thermally conductive transparent material and a phosphor layer, with an LED based light source mounted to the heat sink such that light passes through the phosphor carrier. The phosphor carrier converts at least some of the LED light, with some embodiments emitting a white light combination of LED and phosphor light. The phosphors in the phosphor carriers can operate at a lower temperature to have greater phosphor conversion efficiency and reduced heat related damage. The lamps or bulbs can also comprise a diffuser over the phosphor carrier to distribute light and conceal the phosphor carrier.

A luminescent particle includes a luminescent compound that is configured to perform a photon down conversion on a portion of received light and a reflectance reducing outer surface of the luminescent particle that is operable to increase the portion of received light that is absorbed in the luminescent particle.

A light emitting diode is disclosed, together with associated wafer structures, and fabrication and mapping techniques. The diode includes an active portion, a raised border on the top surface of the active portion and around the perimeter of the top surface of the active portion, a resin in the space defined by the border and the top surface of the active portion, and phosphor particles in the resin that convert the frequencies emitted by the active portion.

SSL lamps or luminaires are disclosed that combine blue, yellow (or green) and red photons or emissions to generate light with the desired characteristics. In different embodiments according to the present invention, the blue emission is not provided by an LED chip or package having a blue LED coated with a yellow phosphor, with blue light leaking through the yellow phosphor. Instead, the blue light component can be provided by other types of LED chips in the SSL luminaire such as one having a blue LED covered by a different colored conversion material, with blue light from the blue LED leaking through the different colored conversion material. In one embodiment, the blue component can be provided by an LED chip comprising a blue emitting LED covered by a conversion material that absorbs blue light and re-emits red light, with a portion of the blue light from the LED leaking through the red conversion material.

An LED lamp or bulb is disclosed that comprises a light source, a heat sink structure and an optical cavity. The optical cavity comprises a phosphor carrier having a conversions material and arranged over an opening to the cavity. The phosphor carrier comprises a thermally conductive transparent material and is thermally coupled to the heat sink structure. An LED based light source is mounted in the optical cavity remote to the phosphor carrier with light from the light source passing through the phosphor carrier. A diffuser dome is included that is mounted over the optical cavity, with light from the optical cavity passing through the diffuser dome. The diffuser dome can disperse the light passing through it into the desired emission pattern, such as omnidirection. In one embodiment, the light source can be blue emitting LED and the phosphor carrier can include a yellow phosphor, with the LED lamp or bulb emitting a white light combination of LED and phosphor light.

A semiconductor structure includes an active region configured to emit light upon the application of a voltage thereto, a window layer configured to receive the light emitted by the active region, and a plurality of discrete phosphor-containing regions on the window layer and configured to receive light emitted by the active region and to convert at least a portion of the received light to a different wavelength than a wavelength of light emitted by the active region. Methods of forming a semiconductor structure including an active region configured to emit light and a window layer include forming a plurality of discrete phosphor-containing regions on the window layer.

A liquid-filled light emitting diode (LED) bulb including a base, a shell connected to the base forming an enclosed volume, a thermally conductive liquid held within the enclosed volume, a support structure connected to the base, and several LEDs attached to the support structure. The thermally conductive liquid has an oxygen content of at least 5 cubic centimeters of oxygen per liter of the thermally conductive fluid.

Apparatuses and methods for producing light emitting devices maximizing luminous flux output are disclosed. In one possible embodiment, a light emitting device comprises a substrate and a reflective layer at least partially covering the substrate. The reflective layer is non-yellowing, and may be substantially light transparent. One or more light emitting diode (LED) chips are disposed on the substrate. The light emitting device may emit white light. The reflective layer may comprise a silicone carrier with light reflective particles dispersed in the silicone carrier. A light diffusion lens may also be disposed on the substrate and surrounding the LED chips. Furthermore, one or more microspheres, light scattering particles, and/or phosphor particles may be dispersed in the lens. In one possible method for producing a light emitting device, a substrate is provided. One or more LED chips are coupled with the substrate, and a high reflective, non-yellowing coating is applied on at least a portion of the top surface of the substrate. The coating comprises a carrier with reflective particles dispersed throughout.

A solid state lighting apparatus includes a plurality of light emitting diodes (LEDs) including at least a first LED and a second LED. Chromaticities of the first and second LEDs are selected so that a combined light generated by a mixture of light from the pair of LEDs has about a target chromaticity. The first LED may include a first LED chip that emits light in the blue portion of the visible spectrum and a phosphor that emits red light in response to blue light emitted by the first LED chip. The second LED emits light having a color point that is above the planckian locus of a 1931 CIE Chromaticity diagram, and in particular may have a yellow green, greenish yellow or green hue.
