An ultrasound controller unit () for controlling an ultrasound transducer unit () in acquiring ultrasound data for the purpose of deriving one or more physiological parameter measurements. The controller is adapted to control weighting coefficients applied to transmit and receive signals of each of a plurality of transducer elements () of the transducer unit. The controller is adapted to detect any artifact in received data affecting (e.g. obscuring) the output path of one or more of the transducers, and to identify the affected transducer elements. The weighting coefficients of the non-affected transducer elements are then adjusted so as to minimize an estimated noise component in the parameter measurement, if derived using only the non-affected transducer elements. Measurements of the one or more parameters are then derived by collecting data from the non-affected transducers only, these being configured with the optimized weighting coefficients.

A system determines a risk level of a respiratory attack of a user of the system. The system comprises part of a network of systems, and it reports information to, and receives information from, the network. The system comprises a local activity monitoring device for tracking the physical activity level of the user. Location information and activity levels in respect of other users of the network of systems are received, relating to when they have suffered a respiratory attack. A warning can then be given to the user which takes account of the location of the user and the activity level or planned activity level of the user, and the received location information and activity levels in respect of other users.

The invention relates to a determination system for determining a heart failure risk for a subject (). The determination system () comprises a photoplethysmogram providing unit for providing a photoplethysmogram of the subject and a heart failure risk determination unit for determining the heart failure risk based on the provided photoplethysmogram. A photoplethysmogram can be provided in an unobtrusive way by using a photoplethysmogram sensor without requiring a physician's attendance. In particular, it is not necessarily required to measure electrocardiograms, to carry out blood tests and to perform a coronary angiography for determining the heart failure risk. The heart failure risk can therefore be determined in a technically relatively simple way without requiring a physician's attendance.

Presented are concepts for monitoring cardio-respiratory function of a patient. One such concept comprises detecting light or sound from the sublingual vasculature using a sublingual sensor unit adapted to be positioned at a sublingual vasculature of the patient's tongue and to generate a sensor output signal based on the detected light or sound. A processing unit adapted to receive at least one of the sensor unit output signal, wherein the sensor unit and the processing unit are arranged to analyze the venous component in the sensor output signal. An output signal from the sublingual sensor may then be used to provide information on cardio-respiratory parameters like respiration rate and respiration rate variability, for example.

A wearable physiological sensor has a housing and a gas-permeable support structure carried by the housing, which contacts the skin of the subject. An air space is provided between the support structure and the housing. Movement of the support structure relative to the housing is sensed. This provides a sensor which is comfortable for the subject and provides good sensitivity in that motion being detected (e.g. an arterial pulse) only needs to impart kinetic energy to the support structure, with a relatively low inertia.

Apparatus for measuring a physiological parameter using a wearable sensor

The invention relates to a determination system () for determining a heart failure risk for a subject (). The determination system is adapted to provide a cardiogram selected from a group consisting of a ballistocardiogram, a seismocardiogram and an impedance cardiogram of the subject, to detect at least one of a presence of a postextrasystolic potentiation (PESP) and a disturbed force-frequency relation (FFR) based on the provided cardiogram and to determine the heart failure risk based on this detection. By using the detection of the presence of the PESP and/or of a disturbed FFR, the heart failure risk can be reliably determined. In particular, it can be determined that the heart failure risk is relatively large, if a PESP is not present and/or if the FFR is disturbed.

According to an aspect, there is provided a fall detection apparatus for detecting a fall by a user, the fall detection apparatus comprising a processing unit configured to: receive measurements of movements of the user over time from a first movement sensor that is to be worn or carried by the user; determine if any of one or more objects are being carried or used by the user; and determine whether the user has fallen by processing the received measurements of the movements of the user and measurements of movements of any object that is being carried or used by the user.
