The invention relates to a process for coating an article (), wherein a coating () having one or more coating layers () is applied to the article (), wherein at least one coating layer () is formed essentially from aluminium, titanium and nitrogen, wherein the coating layer () has, at least in some regions, adjoining lamellae of different chemical composition and is deposited from a gas phase comprising at least one aluminium precursor and at least one titanium precursor. According to the invention, by setting a molar ratio of aluminium to titanium, the lamellae of different chemical composition are each formed with a cubic structure, it being possible for aluminium and titanium to be partly replaced by other metals and for nitrogen to be partly replaced by oxygen and/or carbon with retention of the cubic structure. The invention further relates to a correspondingly produced coating ().

Process for coating an article and coating produced thereby

The invention relates to a body, especially a cutting element, at least partially comprising a coating, whereby the coating is formed from one or more coating layers, whereby at least one coating layer comprises aluminum, titanium and nitrogen or is formed from these elements. According to the invention, the coating layer with aluminum, titanium and nitrogen at least partially comprises lamellae having a lamellar thickness of less than 100 nm, whereby the lamellae comprise successive sections having different phases. The invention further relates to a method for coating a body, especially a cutting element.

The invention relates to an indexable insert of hard metal or cermet with a multi-layer surface coating for a machining of objects essentially made of metal or an alloy, in particular those of a polyphase material such as casting alloys and the like. To increase the service life of the tools with optionally improved machining surface, it is provided with a multi-layer coating that the outermost layer or cover layer is formed as an oxide layer, in particular of &#x3b1;-AlO, whereby the layer beneath the cover layer and connected threto is composed of TiN.

A method for coating a tool or tool part, includes providing a base structure of the tool or the tool part at a temperature of 850&#xb0; C. to 950&#xb0; C. and applying at least one layer to the base structure. One or more layers of the at least one layer is formed of a metal carbonitride of composed of at least one of titanium, zirconium, hafnium, vanadium, niobium, tantalum and chromium. The one or more layers of the at least one layer is deposited by a deposition of a gas containing methane, nitrogen and at least one metal compound. After beginning the applying, the temperature is increased by at least 40&#xb0; C. to an increased temperature and the deposition is continued for a time at the increased temperature.
