A machine is shown for marking the spaces for forming the pleats along the top edge of a wall-hung drapery panel and simultaneously marking a fold point on the rear surface of the hem of the pleated drapery panel. The machine includes a workbench with a pivoted tabletop supporting a pair of adjustable mechanisms. The first adjustable mechanism comprises a series of equally spaced bars supported transversely on elongated slide rods. Each pair of bars is connected together by a threaded sleeve. A manually adjustable drive shaft extends through all of the sleeves for changing the spacing between each connected pair of bars in a uniform manner. The second adjustable mechanism may comprise a lazy tong mechanism that is pivotally connected to the first and last bars and every other bar therebetween so as to vary the distance between every other bar in a uniform manner. A third bar is equidistantly spaced between adjacent bars of the first and second adjustable mechanisms and extends forwardly of said adjacent bars. Each bar supports a marking pen. The adjacent bars of said first and second mechanisms mark a point indicating the boundary of the material required for the pleat and the material required for the space between the pleat. The third forwardly projecting bar marks a point on the drapery panel on the lower end thereof equidistantly spaced between the boundary marks for the spaces so as to indicate the fold line on the rear surface of the hem of the pleated panel.

A universal drapery making machine having a horizontal working table for handling a drapery panel that has its bottom edge and its two side edges hemmed at prior stations, and an unfinished top edge of the drapery. The operator is able to attach the bottom edge of the drapery panel face down to a transverse bar that is movably supported over the top planar surface of the table. Motive means moves the bar toward the rear edge of the table, and the panel is then measured to size, and the top edge of the drape is simultaneously cut and a stiffening tape such as buckram with its own adhesive strip is attached along the cut edge. Then this stiffened edge is manually folded over twice and stapled temporarily in place so the drapery may be removed to a later station for forming the pleats in this header. The table is pivotally supported by a transverse pivotal support means. The table is provided with motive means for raising the back edge of the table toward a vertical standing position or any tilted or slanting position therebetween. A slanting or vertical table is useful when working with loose woven, dimensionally unstable fabric such as casement fabric. In that event a different procedure would be followed. The unfinished drapery panel would be attached to the transverse bar by its bottom hemmed edge, the bar moved toward the rear of the table, the table elevated at the rear so as to suspend the drapery panel by its own weight to obtain a more accurate measurement before cutting and applying the buckram.

Universal drapery making equipment

This invention describes a process for applying a reinforcing or stiffening tape such as buckram or Pellon (registered trademark of the Pellon Corporation, New York, N.Y.) to a panel of drapery or other material directly, without the necessity of pre-marking, measuring or stitching. This is accomplished by the step of adhesively bonding the strip of reinforcing tape near the bottom edge of a panel suspended from the opposite end. Thereafter, the panel and the reinforcing strip adhesively secured thereto, is folded over itself and the reinforcing tape sandwiched between the two layers of panel and secured thereto in the form of a reinforcing heading. The reinforcing tape is mounted in the form of a spool onto a carriage mounted near the bottom of the frame of the tabler. The carriage is mounted for transverse movement across the frame in a straight line so as to adhesively supply one face of the reinforcing tape onto the edge of the panel suspended from the tabler. Since the carriage moves in a perfectly straight line, and since the panel is suspended on the tabler, the strip of adhesively applied tape marks the proper point at which the panel should be folded over onto itself to form the reinforced heading for a panel of the proper length.

This invention describes a process for applying a reinforcing or stiffening strip such as buckram or PELLON (Reg. trademark of the Pellon Corp., New York, N.Y.) to a panel of drapery material directly without the necessity of premarking, measuring, and stitching. This is accomplished by the step of adhesively securing the strip of reinforcing material to the bottom edge of a drapery panel suspended vertically from the hem end. Thereafter, the panel and the reinforcing strip adhesively secured thereto is folded over itself and the reinforcing strip, sandwiched between the two layers of drapery panel is secured thereto in the form of a reinforced heading. The step of securing the reinforcing strip in sandwiched position between the two layers of paneled material may be by means of stapling, adhesive means or by stitching.
