An improved process for producing an oil-in-water emulsion to deliver a substantially water insoluble active pharmaceutical ingredient includes creating a microemulsion containing such ingredient in the oil phase of the emulsion by mixing an aqueous phase including non-ionic surfactant, polyol, and water, wherein the weight ratio of the surfactant to polyol to water is between 10:20:70 and 1:1:1, to generate a mixture, with an oil phase comprising a substantially water insoluble active pharmaceutical ingredient and a long-chain triglyceride; circulating the said mixture through a homogenizer at a temperature from 20&#xb0; C. to 60&#xb0; C. to generate a coarse emulsion; passing the coarse emulsion through a microfluidizer at a pressure of from 70 MPa to 150 MPa at least once to produce an oil-in-water microemulsion; and, optionally, filtering the microemulsion through a 0.2 &#x3bc;m filter and/or mixing the microemulsion with a polymeric stabilizer.

Preparation of an oil-in-water emulsion for polymer stabilized pharmaceutical formulations

An automatic, continuous sterilization system is for use in a form, fill and seal packaging machine for forming, filling and sealing packages. The machine has a turret carrying a plurality of mandrels on which the packages are carried. A bottom panel heating station has a reciprocating bottom panel heater. The sterilization system includes a sterilant source for supplying a sterilant and a sterilant inlet at the bottom panel heater. Packages are positioned on one of the plurality of mandrels and are indexed to the bottom panel heater. The sterilant is introduced to the mandrel when the carton is positioned thereon. Introduction of the sterilant provides a log reduction of microbial colony forming units of at least about 5.9 after ten minutes of machine operation. A method for continuous mandrel sterilization is also disclosed.

System for automatic/continuous sterilization of packaging machine components

A head space inserting system is used in a packaging machine for forming, filling and sealing packages. The inerting system directly introduces an inerting gas into the head space of the formed package subsequent to filling and prior to sealing. The inerting system includes an inerting gas source, an inerting gas heater to heat the inerting gas and an inerting gas nozzle. The inerting gas nozzle is disposed within the form, fill and seal packaging machine to introduce the inerting gas directly into the head space of the packages. The nozzle is further disposed between the top heating station and the sealing station. A method for inerting an atmosphere in the package head space is also disclosed.

Method for inerting gable top carton head space

The inerting system includes an inerting gas source, an inerting gas heater to heat the inerting gas and an inerting gas nozzle. The present invention discloses a method and apparatus for sterilizing packaging with vapor-phase hydrogen peroxide and ultraviolet radiation on a packaging machine. A partially formed packaging material is sprayed with gaseous hydrogen peroxide thereby allowing the gas to condense on the packaging material. The packaging material is then conveyed to a UV radiation source for irradiation of the packaging material. The packaging material is then dried with heated air to flush/remove any residual hydrogen peroxide. The present invention sterilizes the packaging material allowing for filling of the packaging material with a desired product such as milk, juice or water. The packaging material may be any number of possibilities such as gable top cartons, parallelepiped containers, flexible pouches, and the like. The invention allows for the efficacious use of hydrogen peroxide having a concentration of up to 53% while providing a packaging material having less than 0.5 ppm hydrogen peroxide.

UV radiation and vapor-phase hydrogen peroxide sterilization of packaging

The present invention discloses a method and apparatus for sterilizing containers with gas-phase hydrogen peroxide and heat on a linear form, fill and seal packaging machine. A partially formed container is subjected to multiple applications of gaseous hydrogen peroxide and hot air within a sterilization tunnel. The sterilization tunnel is maintained at a temperature greater than the condensation temperature of hydrogen peroxide. The present invention sterilizes the container allowing for filling of the container with a high acid product such as orange juice for ambient distribution. The container may be any number of possibilities such as TETRA REX.RTM. gable top cartons, plastic bottles, and the like. The invention allows for the efficacious use of hydrogen peroxide gas having a concentration of up to 53%.

Then, the carton is transported to a sterilization station where the carton is sprayed with gaseous hydrogen peroxide thereby allowing the gas to condense on the packaging material. The carton is then conveyed to a UV radiation source for irradiation of the packaging material. The carton is then dried with heated air to flush/remove any residual hydrogen peroxide. The present invention sterilizes the carton allowing for filling of the packaging material with a desired product such as milk, juice or water. The invention allows for the efficacious use of hydrogen peroxide having a concentration of up to 53% while providing a packaging material having less than 0.5 ppm hydrogen peroxide. The method and apparatus of the present invention allows for the fabrication of a shelf-stable food product.

A method of disinfecting the food contact surfaces of a food packaging machine comprises introducing to the machine an aqueous solution comprising from about 0.1% to about 1% by weight of hydrogen peroxide and from about 0.01% to about 0.1% by weight of sodium acid pyrophosphate. The food contact surfaces are contacted with the solution at a temperature of at least about 70.degree. C. for a time period of at least about 15 minutes.

Method of disinfecting the food contact surfaces of food packaging

An apparatus for sterilizing packaging material is provided. The apparatus includes a container or bath for containing a liquid sterilant through which the packaging material is drawn and guided. The container having an entry opening and exit opening, and guide rollers. An apparatus for removing liquid and residue from a web of film is provided. The apparatus includes an exhaust tube having an inlet and an outlet, the web of film passing through the exhaust tube from the inlet through the outlet, the exhaust tube being under a negative pressure. Two air knives are located above the outlet of the exhaust tube, one air knife being located on a first side of the film and second air knife being located on a second side of the film, the air knives include a plurality of holes for directing a gas for removing the liquid and residue onto the web of film. The exhaust tube cooperates with the air knives to capture a portion of the removed liquid and residue.
